Indices Had a Mixed Week After Tech Leaders Stumbled

For the week, the Dow added 0.5%, the S&P 500 was essentially flat and the Nasdaq fell 0.9%. Stocks finished little changed on Friday. The Dow was up 24 points to 21384. The S&P 500 ticked up less than a point to 2433 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 13 points to 6151. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, inflated by options expirations. Advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE while the mix was even on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 41 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 23 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index has been churning heavy volume without making meaningful price progress. It remains perched near its all-time high, up +8.7% year-to-date.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated in choppy trading Friday as retail stocks slid and investors digested disappointing economic data. Whole Foods Markets (WFM +29.1%) gapped up after agreeing to a $13.7 billion takeover bid from Amazon.com (AMZN +2.44%), sending food distributor shares tumbling lower. On the data front, housing starts fell 5.5% in May, below expectations of a 4.1% increase. In a separate release, building permits declined 4.9% last month, below estimates of a 1.7% gain. Finally, the University of Michigan preliminary report on consumer sentiment came in at 94.5.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Consumer Staples shares led the losses after the Amazon.com  and Whole Foods deal announcement weighed on grocery store stocks. Kroger (KR -9.24%) gapped down for a 2nd consecutive session, meanwhile Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM -6.3%) violated its 200 DMA line. Discount retailers also declined amid the news with Costco (COST -7.2%) and Wal-Mart (WMT -4.7%) both sinking bellow their respective 50 DMA lines. Health Care shares outperformed with Celgene (CELG +1.45%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 2/32 to yield 2.15%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.6% to $44.72/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.3%.

Perched Near High After Volume-Driven Gains

B S B Bancorp Inc (BLMT +$0.20 or +0.67% to $30.20) finished strong after highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 4/26/17 high. It is perched near its all-time high following volume-driven gains on 6/02/17 and 6/08/17 while rallying from a sound base. Prior highs in the $29-30 area define initial support to watch on pullbacks.

Recently it reported earnings +43% on +20% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter. Prior quarterly earnings increases also have been above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong, and it has earned the highest possible earnings Per Share Rating of 99..

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 110 in Jun '16 to 116 in Mar '17. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria). Its small supply (S criteria) of only 9.7 million shares outstanding can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Color code is changed to yellow while perched within close striking distance of its 52-week high and consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($37.95). Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by a minimum of +40% above average volume may trigger a technical buy signal. Prior lows in the $36-35 area define the next important support level.
