Tech Weakness Hurt Market and Leadership Waned

Stocks finished lower on Monday. The Dow was down 36 points to 21235. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2429 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 32 points to 6175. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers narrowly led decliners on the NYSE but decliners led advancers by a 6-5 margin on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 42 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 117 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is churning above average volume while perched at a record high.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined on Monday as Technology stocks retreated for a consecutive session. Shares of Apple  (AAPL -2.46%) weighed on the S&P 500 after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. Other U.S. tech giants followed, with Facebook Inc. (FB -0.78%), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN -1.38%), Netflix Inc.(NFLX -4.17%) and Google parent Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL -0.86%) each sliding on the session. On the data front, the Treasury Department revealed the U.S. budget deficit rose to $88.4 billion in May from $53 billion a year earlier.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Elsewhere in Tech, Adobe Systems (ADBE -0.60%) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD -1.59%) fell amid continued weakness in the sector. In Health Care, Exact Sciences (EXAS -3.2%) fell after receiving negative mention in an investment publication over the weekend. Industrials shares outperformed with General Electric (GE +3.6%) rallying with news that John Flannery will replace Jeff Immelt as Chairman and CEO.

Perched Near Record High After Solid April '17 Quarterly Results

Dave & Buster's Ent Inc (PLAY +$0.54 or +0.78% to $69.44) halted its slide today with a gain on average volume after pulling back from its all-time high with above average volume behind 2 consecutive losses. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($64.78) defines near-term support to watch.

The Retail - Restaurant firm was last shown in this FSU section on 5/02/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "New Record High With Solid Gain on Near Average Volume". It reported earnings +36% on +16% sales revenues for the April '17 quarter, an improvement after the Jan '17 comparisons was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria).

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 310 in Mar '16 to 409 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 41.5 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been strong. Currently it has an A Timeliness Rating and a B Sponsorship Rating. Following its $16 IPO on 10/10/14 it completed Secondary Offerings on 2/05/15, 5/27/15, and 10/01/15.
