Breadth Positive as Major Indices Rose With More Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Monday. The Dow was up 90 points to 20894. The S&P 500 added 12 points to 2394 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 49 points to 6133. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 53 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 33 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior highs defining near-term support.
The major averages (M criteria) saw their uptrend come under greater pressure on Wednesday, and recently there has been less market leadership (number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). If market conditions continue to deteriorate, disciplined investors will reduce exposure and raise cash levels in their portfolios by selling stocks showing signs of deterioration on a case-by-case basis. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages advanced on the session Monday as President Trump continued his first trip overseas since taking office. President Trump traveled to Saudi Arabia over the weekend, a trip which ended in a multi-billion dollar arms deal. On Monday, he began a two-day visit to Israel which will include a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.8% to $50.73/barrel amid optimism that OPEC will extend production cuts at their meeting in Vienna this week.
Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Industrials outperformed with defense stocks climbing to all-time highs amid the U.S.-Saudi Arabia arms deal. Lockheed Martin (LMT +1.55%) and General Dynamics (GD +0.96%) rose. Jet maker Boeing (BA +1.61%) rose amid reports it signed deals with Saudi Arabia over the weekend, involving the sale of military and passenger aircraft. In Health Care, Amgen (AMGN -2.23%) fell with news it’s Evinity for osteoporosis revealed a higher rate of serious heart-related side effects. Centene (CNC -1.40%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.
Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 4/32 to yield 2.25 %. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.2%.

Stalled After Reaching New Highs and Encountered Mild Pressure
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Grubhub Inc (GRUB (-$0.23 or -0.53% to $43.14) has pulled back below its pivot point with recent losses raising some concerns. It stalled after recently reaching a new high and it has encountered mild distributional pressure. A confirming gain backed by at least +40% above average volume and strong close above the pivot point may clinch a technical buy signal. Little resistance remains due to overhead supply.
It was last shown in this FSU section on 4/28/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Hit New 52-Week High But Ended Near Session Low" . It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 9/29/16 high plus 10 cents in the 4/28/17 mid-day report (read here). It reported Mar '17 quarterly earnings +45% on +39% sales revenues. Three of the past four quarterly earnings were above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been very strong since the high ranked Internet Content firm completed a new Public Offering on 9/03/14.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 318 in Jun '16 to 385 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a fairly small supply of only 83.4 million shares (S criteria) outstanding, which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
