Tech-Heavy Nasdaq Composite Fell Hard as Indices Diverged

For the week, the Dow was up 0.3%, the S&P 500 lost 0.3%, and the Nasdaq retreated 1.6%.Stocks finished mixed on Friday. The Dow was up 89 points to 21271, hitting a new record high. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2431 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 113 points to 6207. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and nearly a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 117 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 90 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index reversed from a record high with a big volume-driven loss.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The S&P 500 gave back early gains, finishing lower as Technology stocks retreated more than 2.5 percent. In context, the Technology sector has rallied so far in 2017, advancing roughly 20% this year. Shares of Apple (AAPL -3.88%) tested their 50 DMA line and weighed on the Nasdaq Composite. Equities reached record intra-day highs earlier in the session as investors shrugged off a widely unexpected result in the U.K. election. Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party lost its outright majority in parliament, raising questions about the U.K. government's ability to lead Brexit talks with the European Union.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Financials outperformed ahead of the FOMC policy meeting next week. Big banks led the sector higher with JP Morgan Chase (JPM +2.37%) rallying above its 50 DMA. In M&A news, DuPont Fabros Technology (DFT +9.83%) after agreeing to a $7.6 billion takeover bid from Digital Realty Trust (DLR -2.94%). Elsewhere in Tech, shares of Facebook (FB -3.30%), Amazon.com (AMZN -3.16%), and Alphabet (GOOGL -3.40%) all retreated more than 3%. VeriFone Systems (PAY -3.49%) fell after lowering its full-year earnings guidance.

Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 5/32 to yield 2.21%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.5% to $45.85/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index advanced 0.4%.

Encountered Distributional Pressure After Hitting New Highs

Netease Inc (NTES -$10.02 or -3.19% to $303.62) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/01/17 high plus 10 cents in the 6/08/17 mid-day report (read here). Its volume-driven gain for a new high on 6/07/17 had helped clinch a technical buy signal. However, it encountered distributional pressure and reversed into the red after hitting a new high on Thursday, then fell again for a 2nd consecutive volume-driven loss. Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

Fundamentals remain strong and it reported earnings +52% on +62% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter, continuing its streak of earnings results well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). A bullish "breakaway gap" on 2/16/17 came after it reported earnings +57% on +43% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarterAnnual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong.

NTES was last shown in this FSU section on 3/23/17 with an annotated graph under the headline "Consolidating in Tight Range Following Breakaway Gap". Currently, it has a Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 844 in Jun '16 to 1,177 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
