Major Averages Ended Slightly Lower
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow was down 50 points to 21029. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2412 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 7 points to 6203. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 57 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 60 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is perched near its record high, pausing after 7 consecutive gains.
The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages declined on the session Tuesday as investors digested a flurry of economic releases. The Conference Board said that consumer confidence fell to 117.9 from a revised 119.4 in April. In separate releases, personal spending increased 0.4% while personal income rose 0.4% last month. Finally, the PCE deflator, which is the Fed's preferred proxy for inflation, ticked up 0.2% in April. In central bank news, Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan stated he sees U.S. growth to remain near 2% and not the 3% forecast by President Trump's administration.
Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Energy shares underperformed with Kinder Morgan (KMI -4.31%) falling. Bank stocks led Financials lower with Goldman Sachs (GS -2.29%) losing ground. Citigroup (C -0.69%) edged lower after announcing it sold its fixed income analytics unit to the London Stock Exchange for $685 million. In the consumer space, Amazon.com (AMZN +0.09%) briefly traded above $1,000 for the first time ever. PVH Corp (PVH +0.28%) after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.
Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 10/32 to yield 2.21%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.7% to $49.47/barrel. COMEX gold slid 0.5% to $1261.30/ounce.

Sputtering Near 50-Day Moving Average After Stalling
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
National Commerce Corp (NCOM -$0.25 or -0.66% to $37.35) has been consolidating near recent its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($37.53) and sputtering near recent lows. Prior lows in the $35 area define the next important chart support level to watch.
Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by a minimum of +40% above average volume may trigger a technical buy signal. It stalled after topping the prior high by only a penny since last shown in this FSU section on 4/16/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Challenging 52-Week High With Volume-Driven Gains". At that time it was trying to rally from a 12-week flat base pattern. It finished strong after highlighted in yellow in the 4/25/17 mid-day report with new pivot point cited based on its 1/27/17 high plus 10 cents (read here).
It reported Mar '17 earnings +32% on +42% sales revenues extending its streak to 9 consecutive quarterly comparisons with earnings increasing above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). It annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. It is up from its $20 IPO on 3/19/15.
It has a Timeliness rating of B and a Sponsorship rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 94 in Jun '16 to 128 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 10.4 million shares (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
