Dow Industrials and S&P 500 Index Rose Above 50-Day Averages
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow was down 0.4%, the S&P 500 lost 0.4%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.6%. Stocks finished higher on Friday. The Dow was up 141 points to 20804. The S&P 500 added 16 points to 2381 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 28 points to 6083. The volume reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by 3-1 on the NYSE and 9-5 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 33 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 17 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index rebounded to end the week above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages (M criteria) saw their uptrend come under greater pressure on Wednesday, and recently there has been less market leadership (number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). If market conditions continue to deteriorate, disciplined investors will reduce exposure and raise cash levels in their portfolios by selling stocks showing signs of deterioration on a case-by-case basis. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages advanced on the session as political concerns eased and investors focused on economic and corporate earnings growth. Stocks experienced their biggest sell-off of the year earlier this week as investors weighed President Trump’s chances to deliver on his pro-growth agenda. Rising oil prices were a catalyst in boosting stocks on Friday. NYMEX WTI crude added 1.7% to $50.19/barrel ahead of next week’s OPEC meeting where production cuts are expected to be extended.
All 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Technology stocks outperformed with Qualcomm (QCOM +2.78%) on the rise, and Autodesk (ADSK +14.69%) up considerably as the company saw strong increases in subscription numbers this quarter. Elsewhere in earnings, Deere & Co (DE +7.30%) rose after the heavy equipment maker reported better-than-expected quarterly profit. McKesson (MCK 8.18%) amid strong results in pharmaceutical distribution and services. In the consumer space, Foot Locker (FL -16.66%) as quarterly revenue fell short of Street forecasts. Symantec (SYMC -2.44%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.
Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 3/32 to yield 2.23%. In commodities, COMEX gold gained 0.2% to $1254.80/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.7%.

Retailer Rallied +25% in 2 Months Since Featured
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI +$0.95 or +2.41% to $40.45) is challenging its all-time high. It is very extended from any sound base. Recently it reported earnings +22% on +16% sales revenues for the Jan '17 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. It still has a very strong 97 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating. Results were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline for the prior 7 quarters. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been good.
Its 50 DMA line ($35.64) defines near-term support to watch. OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 4/24/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Winning Streak Continues for Discount Retailer". The Retail - Discount & Variety firm traded up as much as +25.9% since highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high plus 10 cents in the 3/27/17 mid-day report (read here).
OLLI was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 355 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 60.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
