Tech Rebound Helps Nasdaq Lead Major Indices Higher

For the week, the Dow was up 0.1%, the S&P 500 added 0.2% and the Nasdaq climbed 1.8%.  Stocks finished mostly higher on Friday. The Dow fell 2 points to 21394. The S&P 500 added 3 points to 2438 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 28 points to 6265. The volume totals reported were much higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 37 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 36 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average had higher volume as it fell for a 4th consecutive session, consolidating well above prior highs and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, perched near its all-time high.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The S&P 500 advanced as Energy shares rebounded and investors digested commentary from Federal Reserve officials. NYMEX WTI crude added 0.8% to $43.06/barrel, paring its weekly retreat to 4%. In Fed news, St. Louis President James Bullard stated that current economic readings suggest the Fed can “wait and see” before raising rates again. On the data front, new home sales rose 2.9% in May, below expectations. Separately, research firm Markit revealed U.S. manufacturing PMI eased to 52.1 this month.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Technology stocks paced the gains with Western Digital (WDC +3.4%) rose. Energy shares outperformed amid the rebound in crude prices. Valero Energy (VLO  1.8%) and Phillips 66 (PSX +1.7%) rose. In earnings, Blackberry (BBRY -12.2%) fell after quarterly revenue fell below Street forecasts. Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY -12.1%) fell as the home goods retailer missed estimates on the top and bottom lines. In the consumer space, Hain Celestial (HAIN -3.2%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries edged higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 1/32 to yield 2.14%. In commodities, COMEX gold gained 0.7% to $1256.20/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.3%.

Rebounding Since Testing Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line

Veeva Systems Inc Cl A (VEEV +$0.78 or +1.24% to $63.82) has been rebounding toward its prior high after finding support near Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($58.42). That short term average and recent low ($56.94 on 6/12/17) define important near-term support to watch.

VEEV was last shown in this FSU section on 5/15/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Wedging Into New High Territory, Extended From Sound Base". It is up +30.2% since first highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 11/30/16 high plus 10 cents in the 3/16/17 mid-day report (read here).

The high-ranked Computer Software - Medical firm reported earnings +47% on +32% sales revenues for the April  '17 quarter, and the past 3 quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. It has the highest possible 99 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rank and it has a 95 Relative Strength (RS) rating. Both of those ratings must be above 80 for a stock to meet the guidelines for consideration.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 340 in Mar '16 to 475 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under only slight accumulation over the past 50 days.

Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by a minimum of +40% above average volume may trigger a technical buy signal. Prior lows in the $36-35 area define the next important support level.
