Tech Rebound Helped Nasdaq Composite Outpace Its Peers

Stocks finished mostly higher on Wednesday. The Dow slipped a point to 21478. The S&P 500 added 3 points to 2432 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 40 points to 6150. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior abbreviated session's totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 27 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 36 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index rebounded near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

The major averages (M criteria) remain in an uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), so it will be very important to watch the new highs totals in the days ahead. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Pagelists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated in choppy trading Wednesday after the Federal Reserve released the minutes from its June FOMC meeting. The release showed Fed officials were divided on the timing for reducing the balance sheet of $4.5 trillion in bond holdings. Separately, some members expressed concern that subdued market volatility could lead to financial stability risks. Most officials however did reiterate support for continued gradual rate increases. On the data front, factory orders fell 0.8% in May, the biggest drop since last November.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Energy shares underperformed as crude oil snapped its eight-day winning streak. In the consumer space, O’Reilly Auto (ORLY -18.89%) tumbled as comparable sales missed Street forecasts in sympathy with weak demand. Tesla (TSLA -7.24%) slid after reporting second-quarter model deliveries came in below consensus estimates. In Technology, Nvidia (NVDA +2.67%) rose as the chip maker announced an AI-focused partnership with Baidu Inc. (BIDU +2.14%). Teradyne (TER +4.01%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 5/32 to yield 2.33%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 4.4% to $44.98/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.1%.

Pulling Back After Getting Extended From Prior Base

Stamps.Com Inc (STMP -$0.05 or -0.03% to $144.45) abruptly retreated from its 52-week high with a big loss on the prior session. It is extended from the prior base and it wedged higher with recent gains lacking great volume conviction. The prior high ($136 on 2/22/17) defines near term support above its 50-day moving average DMA line ($131.63).

STMP was last shown in this FSU section with an annotated graph on 5/24/17 under the headline, "Rallying From Bottom of 13-Week Cup Shaped Base". It was highlighted in yellow in the 5/24/17 mid-day report (read here) while rallying near prior highs. A new pivot point was cited based on its 2/22/17 high plus 10 cents. Volume-driven gains for new highs triggered a technical buy signal.

It reported earnings +62% on +28% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter, continuing its strong growth track record. It has earned an Earnings Per Share Rating of 99, putting it in the top 1% of all publicly traded stocks based on its earnings history over the past 5 years. Currently it has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of C.

The Retail - Internet group has a 94 Relative Strength Rating. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 354 in Dec '16 to 381 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign in recent months concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 16.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
