S&P 500 Index Fell Below 50-Day Moving Average Line

Stocks finished lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 158 points to 21320. The S&P 500 lost 22 points to 2409 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 61 points to 6089. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session's totals on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by nearly a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 13 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE while the totals were even on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index fell below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

The major averages (M criteria) have seen their uptrend recently come under pressure. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), however the new highs totals have dried up in recent days. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Pagelists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined on the session Thursday as Technology stocks retreated and investors digested disappointing economic releases. Shares of Facebook (FB -1.01%), Apple (AAPL -0.94%), Microsoft (MSFT -0.74%) and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL -0.49%) all traded lower, pushing the Technology sector down by 0.56 percent. On the data front, an ADP report showed that 158,000 workers were added to private payrolls in June, below estimates of 188,000. In a separate release, initial jobless claims came in at 248,000, above the expected 243,000.

All 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory with Telecom leading the losses. Consumer Discretionary shares underperformed with L Brands (LB -14.08%) falling as same-store sales tumbled 17% at the company’s Victoria’s Secret chain. Tesla (TSLA -5.58%) fell after its Model S failed to achieve the top score in several tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In earnings, Yum China (YUMC -12.91%) fell as quarterly revenue came in below Street forecasts. Miller Herman Inc (MLHR +8.27%) rose after the office furniture maker reported better-than-expected quarterly profit.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 11/32 to yield 2.36%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.3% to $45.25/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.5%.

Florida Bank Perched -6.6% Off All-Time High

Seacoast Banking Corp Fl (SBCF -$0.39 or -1.59% to $24.16) has been quietly consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($23.78) and it is still perched within striking distance of the new pivot point cited based on its 4/25/17 high. It was previously noted - "Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new technical buy signal. Fundamentals remain strong." Gains above the pivot point should be backed by a minimum of +40% above average volume to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Members were reminded - "Without fresh proof of institutional buying demand it is considered unlikely to see a meaningful price advance."

The Stuart, Florida based banking firm reported Mar '17 earnings +30% on +24% sales revenues versus the year-ago period, marking its 4th consecutive strong earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) coupled with strong sales revenues increases. Annual earnings (A criteria) have improved since a downturn and loss in FY '12.

SBCF was last shown in this FSU section on 5/25/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Relative Strength Rating Slumped After Lingering Below 50 DMA". It was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the 2/13/17 mid-day report (read here). Its solid gain backed by +234% above average volume clinched a technical buy signal, however it then completed a new Public Offering and stalled thereafter.

It has earned a Timeliness Rating of B and a Sponsorship Rating of C. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 183 in Sep '16 to 242 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. However, its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 0.8 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight distributional pressure for the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 40.7 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
