Stocks finished mixed on Monday. The Dow was up 14 points to 21409. The S&P 500 ticked up a point to 2439 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 18 points to 6247. The volume totals reported were much lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by nearly a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and 5-4 on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 51 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 37 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is hovering near its all-time high, consolidating well above prior highs and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session Monday as gains in the Financial sector helped offset losses in Technology. Overseas, European shares climbed higher after the Italian government said it reached a deal Sunday to shut down two regional banks. Lenders in the U.S. caught a boost amid the news with Goldman Sachs adding 1.5% to $220.44. On the data front, durable goods orders fell 1.1% in May, below expectations of a 0.6% decline.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In the consumer space, Rite-Aid (RAD +30.23%) rose amid reports its deal with Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA +1.56%) is likely to gain approval. Hertz Global (HTZ +13.52%) rose with news the company is working with Apple (AAPL -0.31%) to lease a small fleet of cars to test self-driving technology. Tech stocks underperformed with Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL -1.42%) and Facebook (FB -0.95%) both losing ground. Shares of Intuit (INTU -1.42%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 3/32 to yield 2.14%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1% to $43.43/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.8% to $1246.30/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.2%.

Medical Products Firm Perched Near All-Time High

Edwards Lifesciences Cp (EW -$1.83 or -1.52% to $118.32) is perched within close striking distance of its all-time high. Additional confirming gains into new high territory with above average volume would be a reassuring sign that it may be capable of a sustained and meaningful advance in price. It was last shown in this FSU section on 5/17/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Some Overhead Supply Remains For High Ranked Medical Firm". It was highlighted in yellow in the 5/16/17 mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its high after a cup-with-handle base (read here).

EW reported earnings +32% on +27% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter. Three of the past 4 quarterly comparisons had earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) and its annual earnings growth (A criteria) is a good match with the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines.

The Medical - Products firm has seen the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 1489 in Jun '16 to 1,549 in Mar '17, a sign of institutional buying demand (I criteria). Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has an A Timeliness Rating and a B Sponsorship rating.
