Distributional Pressure Weighs on Major Indices

Stocks finished lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 167 points to 21287. The S&P 500 lost 21 points to 2419 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 90 points to 6144. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of distributional selling coming from the institutional crowd. Decliners led advancers by more than a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 41 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 37 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) have seen their uptrend come under pressure. For any sustainable rally there must be a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined Thursday as losses in the Technology sector outweighed gains in Financials. Shares of Apple (AAPL -1.47%) were lower on the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone release. On the data front, the Commerce Department said the economy grew at a 1.4% annualized rate in the first-quarter, revised up from the previously reported 1.2%. Separately, initial jobless claims came in at 244,000, above the expected 240,000. In M&A news, Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA +1.66%) rose after cancelling its planned merger with Rite-Aid.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Technology stocks led the losses with Facebook (FB -1.44%) and Netflix Inc (NFLX -2.16%) each sliding more than 1.4% on the session. Consumer Staples shares underperformed with Rite-Aid (RAD -26.21%) and Fred’s (FRED -22.81%) both falling hard. Financials finished higher as banks tested by the Federal Reserve got their capital repurchase programs approved during the annual stress test. Citigroup (C +2.76%) rose after receiving permission for a total of $19 billion to be returned to shareholders.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 10/32 to yield 2.27%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.2% to $44.82/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.5%.

Recently Found Support Near 50-Day Moving Average

Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI -$0.05 or -0.12% to $41.55recently rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($40.35) helping its outlook improve. Recent lows in the $37-38 area define near-term support to watch on pullbacks.

Fundamentals remain strong. Recently it reported Apr '17 quarterly earnings +25% on +17% sales revenues, meeting the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). It still has a very strong 96 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating. The Retail - Discount & Variety firm traded up as much as +34.3% since highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high plus 10 cents in the 3/27/17 mid-day report (read here). OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 5/19/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Retailer Rallied +25% in 2 Months Since Featured".

OLLI was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 355 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 60.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
