The major averages (M criteria) remain in an uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), so it will be very important to watch the new highs totals in the days ahead. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. The Featured Stocks Pagelists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced on Monday, briefly touching a fresh record high as financial shares outperformed on the session. Bank stocks are coming off a strong week, climbing higher after positive results from Federal Reserve’s annual stress test. Shares of JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +1.56%) and Citigroup (C +2.20%) both rose. On the data front, research firm Markit revealed that U.S. manufacturing PMI came in at 52.0 in June. In a separate release, ISM’s manufacturing index expanded last month to its highest level since August 2014.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Energy stocks paced the gains as crude oil traded higher for the eighth consecutive session. In the consumer space, Disney (DIS +1.18%) rose amid speculation that Verizon (VZ +0.74%) could be eyeing an acquisition. Tesla (TSLA -2.49%) slid with news the automaker will deliver its new Model 3 sedans on July 28. In Industrials, Caterpillar (CAT -0.44%) fell amid reports the firm did not submit required export filings with the government in recent years.

Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 11/32 to yield 2.35%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.7% to $46.84/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.6%.

G - Still sputtering below its 50 DMA line, and the longer it lingers below that important short-term average the worse its outlook gets. A rebound above the 50 DMA line ($38.82) is needed for its outlook to improve. Prior low ($35.02 on 6/15/17) defines the next important chart support level where a violation would raise more serious concerns.
