Major Indices Fell on Higher Volume

Stocks finished firmly lower Tuesday. The Dow fell 391 points to 24361. The S&P declined 31 points to 2689 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 37 points to close at 7396. Volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of distributional pressure. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 38 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 55 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the NYSE. The major indices (M criteria) remain in a confirmed rally with healthy leadership (stocks hitting new highs) continuing to underpin the market. New buying efforts are justified only when all key criteria of the fact-based investment system are satisfied. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with a loss Tuesday on higher volume.

The major averages retreated after the long holiday week amid rising geopolitical concerns in Europe. Market weakness was attributed to investors seeking perceived safety as Italian and Spanish government bonds sold off precipitously in conjunction with reports over the weekend that both countries may be facing unexpected elections this summer. The yield on the U.S. benchmark 10-year note tumbled 15 basis points to 2.78%. On the data front, the Conference Board revealed consumer confidence increased in May from a downward revision in April’s reading.

Nine of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished lower on the session. Financials were down the most, tumbling 3.4% amid concerns over falling global interest rates. Shares of JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM -4.27%) and Morgan Stanley (MS -5.75%) fell in conjunction with lower yields. Industrials also underperformed as the group fell more than 1.5% ahead of this week’s U.S. and Chinese trade negotiations. In Technology, Applied Materials (AMAT +2.30%) and Micron Technology (MU +2.07%) rose on positive analyst commentary following this weekend’s Barron’s feature.

In commodities, WTI crude fell 1.6% to $66.81/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.3% to $1300.30/ounce. In FOREX trading, the U.S. dollar index added 0.4% against its peers.

Rebounded Above 50-Day Average Yet Still Faces Overhead Supply

Qualys Inc (QLYS +$2.10 or +2.82% to $76.70) rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($76.43) with today's big gain backed by average volume helping its technical stance improve. It still faces resistance due to overhead supply up to the $85 level while it may be forming a new base pattern. Its intra-day slump on 5/02/18 undercut the low of the prior base, which resets the base count.

Currently it has a Timeliness Rating of A and Sponsorship Rating of C, but its Accumulation/Distribution rating is D- while its Up/Down Volume ratio of 0.9 is slightly bearish. QLYS was last shown in this FSU section on 4/18/18 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Quickly Rallied More Than 5% Above Prior High". It stalled after finishing strong when highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/09/18 high plus 10 cents in the 4/17/18 mid-day report (read here). It hit a new all-time high (N criteria) with a considerable gap up and gain backed by +108% above average volume, rising from a "late stage" base.

Recently it reported Mar '18 earnings +80% on +22% sales revenues, its 4th consecutive quarter above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings history (A criteria) has been strong. It went through a deep consolidation since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 5/06/15.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 294 in Jun '17 to 371 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 31.6 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to great volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The Computer Software - Security group has a 93 Group Relative Strength Rating, and leadership (L criteria) in the industry group is another favorable factor with respect to the fact-based investment system.

Y - This week it rose above the pivot point cited based on its 4/18/18 high after forming a "double bottom" base, however gains were lacking the +40% above average volume necessary to clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Confirming volume-driven gains would be a reassuring sign of fresh institutional buying demand. The 50 DMA line ($77.45) defines near-term support above its 200 DMA line and prior lows in the $71-72 area. Fundamentals remain strong.
