Leadership Improved as Major Indices Ended Mixed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the S&P 500 was essentially flat while the Dow dropped 0.6%, and the Nasdaq lost 0.4%. Stocks were mixed Friday. The Dow fell 11 points to 24311 while the S&P 500 added 2 points to 2669. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 1 point to 7119. The volume totals reported were lower than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE, but only by a narrow margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 32 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) have slumped as the latest confirmed rally has come under pressure. New buying efforts are justified only when all key criteria of the fact-based investment system are satisfied. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average remains below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It finished Friday's session -8.7% off its record high. The 200 DMA line and prior lows define important near-term support.
The major averages fluctuated throughout the day as investors digested a deluge of corporate earnings reports. On the data front, the preliminary reading for first-quarter GDP revealed the U.S. economy grew at a 2.3% annualized rate, above the projected 2.0% consensus estimate. In geopolitical news, North and South Korea held a summit this morning and agreed to work on a new peace agreement between the two countries.
Seven of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished the session higher. Consumer Discretionary outperformed as Amazon (AMZN +3.6%) rose after topping revenue forecasts and announcing a cost increase for its prime membership. Energy was down the most with Exxon Mobil (XOM -3.8%) falling in sympathy with its mixed first-quarter results. In other earnings news, Microsoft (MSFT +1.7%) rose as its profits beat analyst earnings projections. SVB Financial Group (SIVB +18.7%) was up the most in the S&P 500 after the financial services firm earnings exceeded analyst expectations.
Treasuries were higher as the yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell two basis points to 2.96%. In commodities, WTI crude shed 0.2% to $68.08/barrel. COMEX gold rose 0.4% to $1322.90/ounce amid a weaker dollar.

Slumping Near Important Near-Term Support
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Paypal Holdings Inc (PYPL -$1.90 or -2.50% to $74.13) slumped and has been struggling below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($78.13) raising concerns. Prior lows in the $71-72 area define important near-term support along with its 200 DMA line ($71.60), and more damaging losses would trigger technical sell signals. A rebound above the 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve
Fundamentals remain strong. It reported earnings +30% on +24% sales revenues for the Mar '18 quarter, its 4th consecutive quarterly earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). PYPL was last shown in this FSU section on 3/27/18 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Sputtering Below 50-Day Moving Average Again". It was highlighted in yellow in the 2/01/18 mid-day report (read here) while testing support at prior highs and its 10 week moving average line.
Very encouraging sales revenues and earnings growth rate acceleration was noted in prior sequential quarterly comparisons, making it a better match with the fact-based investment system's winning models.Sales revenues rose by +17%, +18%, +21%, and +26% in the Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec '17 quarters, respectively, versus the year ago periods. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been very strong and steady.
The high-ranked Finance - Credit Card/Payment Processing firm saw the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 2,054 in Mar '17 to 2,408 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been nearly neutral concerning accumulation/distribution over the past 50 days. It has a Timeliness Rating of B and Sponsorship Rating of B. Charts courtesy wwwstockcharts.com

Y - Encountered distributional pressure on the prior session after challenging its all-time high. Recent gains lacked great volume conviction as it wedged up above the new pivot point cited based on its 2/28/18 high plus 10 cents. Gains above a stock's pivot point must have more than +40% above average volume to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Very little resistance remains due to overhead supply up to the $569 level. The 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch above the recent lows ($480).
