Indices Rose With Less Volume Conviction

Stocks finished higher on Wednesday. The Dow was up 143 points to 21454. The S&P 500 added 21 points to 2440 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 87 points to 6234. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and 5-2 on the Nasdaq exchange.  Leadership improved as there were 37 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 15 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is perched -0.3% off its record high.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages advanced on the session as Financials rallied and investors digested central bank news. Overseas, the European Central Bank attempted to clarify comments made by President Mario Draghi on Tuesday. Draghi hinted at the possibility of the ECB winding down its stimulus in response to accelerating growth in Europe. On the data front, wholesale inventories rose 0.3% in May, slightly above expectations. Separately, pending home sales declined for the third consecutive month.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Financials paced the gains amid the prospect of higher interest rates. Bank of America (BAC +2.62%) while JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +2.01%). In earnings, General Mills (GIS +1.62%) rose as the food maker reported better-than-expected quarterly results. KB Home (KBH +5.43%) rose after the company posted double-digit increases in net order value and deliveries. In Technology, Paychex (PAYX -1.65%) fell as revenue guidance came in below Street forecasts. Advance Auto Parts (AAP -4.30%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note down 3/32 to yield 2.22%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.1% to $44.74/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.4%.

Tech, Financial, Retail, and Commodity-Linked Groups Rose

On Wednesday the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.27%), Bank Index ($BKX +1.67%) and the Retail Index ($RLX +1.02%) ended unanimously higher. The tech sector had a positive bias as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +2.45%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.77%) and the Networking Index ($NWX +1.24%) posted unanimous gains. Commodity-linked groups also gained ground as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.82%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.74%) and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.60%) each rose modestly.

Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com

PICTURED: ThRetail Index ($RLX +1.02%) halted its slide near the prior low and rebounded toward its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. A rebound above the 50 DMA line by the Retail Index would be a reassuring sign for the broader market rally, since consumer spending accounts for approximately 2/3 of the US economy.

China-Based Hotel Firm is Extended From Any Sound Base

China Lodging Group Ads (HTHT -$0.39 or -0.46% to $83.98) is extended from any sound base. During its recent consolidation it found support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($76.15) defining important near-term support to watch.

Recently it reported earnings +74% on +4% sales revenues for first quarter ended March 31, 2017.  The
Sep '16  quarter was below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its waning sales revenues growth rate was also noted as a fundamental concern. Nonetheless, bullish action has continued after it was last shown in this FSU section on 5/18/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Traded Up 108% in 10 Months Since First Highlighted". HTHT was first featured in yellow in the 7/13/16 mid-day report (read here).

The number of top-rated funds owing its shares rose from 87 in Sep '15 to 162 in Mar '17 a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Currently the high-ranked Leisure- Lodging firm has an A Timeliness rating but a D Sponsorship rating. Its small supply of 27 million shares (S criteria) in the public float may contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
