Positive Breadth and Leadership Expanded as Indices Rose

Stocks finished modestly higher on Thursday. The Dow was up 8 points to 21182. The S&P 500 ticked up less than a point to 2433 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 24 points to 6321. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 90 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 62 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is perched near its record high.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages advanced on the session after former FBI director James Comey’s testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Market participants cheered the absence of major developments from the testimony, with hopes President Trump can implement his pro-growth agenda. Overseas, the European Central Bank concluded its policy meeting on Thursday leaving interest rates unchanged. Separately, British stocks finished lower as investors await the results from the snap-election called by U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Financials outperformed for a consecutive session. Big banks led the advance with Citigroup (C +2.2%) rising. In the consumer space, Alibaba (BABA +13.3%) gapped up as the e-commerce giant projected full-year 2018 revenue growth guidance of 45-49%. Nordstrom (JWN +10.3%) rose after announcing the potential idea of taking the company private. In earnings, Vail Resorts (MTN -1.9%) fell as the company missed estimates on the top and bottom lines. Lear Corp (LEN -3.9%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 5/32 to yield 2.19%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.3% to $45.60/barrel. COMEX gold fell 1% to $1277.10/ounce.

Some Overhead Supply Remains After Latest Technical Breakout

Thor Industries Inc (THO +$1.00 +0.98% to $103.03) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 4/27/17 high in the 6/07/17 mid-day report (read here). Recently it reported earnings +40% on +57% sales revenues for the Apr '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings history. It gapped up on 6/06/17, clearing a "double bottom" base while rebounding toward prior highs. It still faces some resistance due to overhead supply up through the $115 level.

THO was last shown in this FSU section on 1/24/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Rose From Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line". The Building - Mobile/Mfg & RV firm found support near prior lows after undercutting its 200 DMA line during its consolidation since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 3/09/17. The past 3 quarters were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been good. Return on Equity is reported at 23%, well above the 17% guideline.

It has earned a current Timeliness rating of C and a Sponsorship rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 489 in Mar '16 to 600 in Mar '17. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria). Its small supply of only 48.9 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
