Major Indices Posted Gains With More Leadership

Stocks finished higher Monday. The Dow added 6 points to 25322, while the S&P 500 gained 3 points to 2782. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 14 points to 7659. Volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and slightly lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was slightly positive as advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE. There were 94 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 68 on the prior session. The major indices (M criteria) remain in a confirmed rally with healthy leadership (stocks hitting new highs) continuing to underpin the market. The major averages traded in a narrow range ahead of a busy week of political and economic updates. In geopolitical news, President Trump elected over the weekend not to have the U.S. sign the G-7 communique. Investors also appeared to focus attention on tomorrow’s long-anticipated summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve concludes its two day policy meeting and is widely expected to announce it will raise the benchmark interest rate for the second time this year.

Seven of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher. Consumer Staples paced gains as shares of J M Smucker (SJM +3.56%) and Kraft Heinz (KHC +2.41%) rose. Healthcare stocks also outperformed as Boston Scientific (BSX +7.42%) rose amid reports Stryker Corp (SYK -5.12%) has made a takeover attempt. Utilities were down the most as PG&E Corp. (PCG -4.08%) fell following a report that blamed the company’s equipment for the start of several California wildfires.

Treasuries were slightly weaker with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note up two basis points to 2.95%. In commodities, WTI crude climbed 0.5% to $66.04/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.1% to $1304.30/ounce despite a marginally stronger dollar.

Retail, Networking and Commodity-Linked Groups Rose

On Monday the Bank Index ($BKX -0.62%) fell and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.04%) was little changed, meanwhile the Retail Index ($RLX +0.39%) posted a modest gain. The tech sector was led by the Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%) and the Biotech Index ($BTK +0.21%) also edged higher, but the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.23%) ended slightly lower. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.52%) edged lower and yet the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.36%) and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.84%) both posted gains.

Encountered Distributional Pressure at All-Time High

Visa Inc (V -$0.83 or -0.62% to 133.91) is perched near its "max buy" level after encountering some distributional pressure at its all-time high. Prior highs in the $126 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($127.23) define near-term support to watch on pullbacks.

It was last shown in this FSU section on 4/26/18 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Volume-Driven Gain For New High Triggered Technical Buy Signal". It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/29/18 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It gapped up hitting a new all-time high closed above its pivot point with a big gain backed by +81% above average volume triggering a convincing technical buy signal.

It reported earnings +29% on +13% sales revenues for the Mar '18 quarter, and 3 of the past 4 quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its strong and steady annual earnings history satisfies the A criteria.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 3,624 in Jun '17 to 3,860 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria, however it is already well known by the institutional crowd.There are also 2.03 billion shares outstanding (S criteria), which can make it a less likely sprinter. Leadership shown by other firms in the Finance - Credit Card Payment Processing group (L criteria) has been a reassuring sign.
