Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The Dow was up 21 points to 21553. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2447 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 13 points to 6274. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the NYSE but decliners led advancers slightly on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 66 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index has rebounded above its 50-day moving average line, rising toward prior highs.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the new highs totals are healthy despite some recent sputtering. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The Dow advanced on Thursday, notching a record high for a consecutive session following the second day of testimony from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. In a speech before the Senate Banking Committee, Yellen stated that she sees the risk on inflation as being two-sided. Yellen noted however it is premature to conclude that the underlying inflation trend would continue to fall below the Fed's 2% target, even though price gains have slowed in recent months. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 247,000, above the expected 245,000.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Financials outperformed as bank earnings kick off second-quarter reporting season on Friday. Morgan Stanley (MS +1.25%) and Bank of America (BAC +1.11%) both gained ground. In the consumer space, Target (TGT +4.80%) rose as the retailer said second-quarter comparable sales will be positive. Delta Air Lines (DAL -1.77%) fell after reporting weaker-than-expected quarterly profit. In Telecom, AT&T (T -1.68%) slid after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 7/32 to yield 2.34%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.2% to $46.03/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.2% to $1217.10/ounce.

High Ranked Telecom - Fiber Optics Firm

Lumentum Holdings Inc (LITE +$3.70 or +6.13% to $64.05) rallied to its second-best close with +55% above average volume today. It was highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 6/09/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. It has rebounded near prior highs after finding support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior highs in the $55 area during the recent consolidation.

The high-ranked Telecom - Fiber Optics firm reported earnings +53% on +11% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter and fundamentals (C and A criteria) remain strong. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong, helping it earn the highest possible Earnings Per Share (EPS) rank of 99, well above the +80 minimum guideline.

It found support at its 200 DMA line after dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 4/12/17 when last shown in this FSU section with an annotated graph under the headline, "Weak Technical Action Hurts Outlook for Fiber Optics Firm".

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 266 in Dec '15 to 446 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.

Y - Highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 6/09/17 high plus 10 cents in earlier mid-day report. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Reported earnings +53% on +11% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter and fundamentals (C and A criteria) remain strong. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
