Healthy Leadership Remains as Major Indexes Ended Mixed

Stocks finished mixed on Thursday. The Dow was down 29 points to 21611. The S&P 500 traded flat at 2473 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 5 points to 6390. The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers narrowly led decliners on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were 73 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 72 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered a shrinking list of new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is perched near its record high after finding support near prior highs and well above its 50-day moving average line during its recent consolidation.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session as investors weighed corporate earnings against political uncertainty in Washington. On Thursday, reports revealed that special U.S. counsel Robert Mueller is looking into the business dealings of President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner and other associates. Overseas, the European Central Bank concluded its July policy meeting leaving interest rates unchanged. In his press conference, President Mario Draghi provided no clear signal about the timing of reducing stimulus measures.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Financials underperformed with KeyCorp (KEY -3.67%) down. American Express (AXP -0.67%) edged lower despite beating estimates on the top and bottom lines. Technology stocks fluctuated with Qualcomm (QCOM -4.95%) slid as the chipmaker’s quarterly profit was down 40% from a year ago.

In the consumer space, Sears Holding (SHLD +10.60%) rallied after announcing the launch of Kenmore products on Amazon.com (AMZN +0.18%) . Appliance-sellers Home Depot (HD -4.09%) and Lowe’s (LOW -5.56%) each declined considerably amid the news. Elsewhere, Nike (NKE +2.3%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 2/32 to yield 2.26%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.7% to $46.79/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index retreated 0.5%.

Still Faces Some Resistance Due to Overhead Supply

Thor Industries Inc (THO +$0.43 or +0.41% to $105.22) has been consolidating above its "max buy" level following its prior technical breakout. It still faces some resistance due to overhead supply up through the $115 level. Subsequent volume-driven gains above the recent high and gains into new all-time high territory might signal the beginning of a meaningful new leg up in price.

THO was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 4/27/17 high in the 6/07/17 mid-day report (read here). It had gapped up on 6/06/17, clearing a "double bottom" base while rebounding toward prior highs. It was last shown in this FSU section on 6/08/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Some Overhead Supply Remains After Latest Technical Breakout". The Building - Mobile/Mfg & RV firm found support near prior lows after undercutting its 200 DMA line during its consolidation since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 3/09/17.

Recently it reported earnings +40% on +57% sales revenues for the Apr '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings history. The past 3 quarters were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been good. Return on Equity is reported at 23%, well above the 17% minimum guideline.

It has earned a current Timeliness rating of B and a Sponsorship rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 489 in Mar '16 to 590 in Jun '17. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria). Its small supply of only 48.9 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

G - Color code is changed to green after a loss today with higher volume undercut prior lows and violated its 50 DMA line ($48.82) triggering technical sell signals. Only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.

G - Quietly rebounded above its 50 DMA line ($67.09) today helping its outlook to improve. Damaging losses below the recent low ($64.26 on 7/07/17) would raise greater concerns and trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.

Y - Pulled back today after recent gains lacking volume conviction. A new pivot point was cited based on its 6/02/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains and a strong close above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line ($41.42) defines support above recent lows in the $37-38 area.

Y - Ended near the session low today with a loss on near average volume. Near-term support is at its 50 DMA line ($59.35) and its prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17), where damaging violations may trigger technical sell signals. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
