Indices Perched Near Record Highs Were Mixed and Little Changed

Stocks finished little changed on Monday. The Dow was down 8 points to 21629. The S&P 500 was essentially flat at 2459 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2 points to 6314. The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and by a narrower margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 50 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 54 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session Monday as second-quarter earnings season begins this week. According to Bloomberg data, consensus projections are for S&P 500 profits to grow 7.0% and revenues to be up 4.6% year-over-year for the three month period. On the data front, a report showed manufacturing activity in the New York Fed region fell to 9.8, from 19.8 the previous month. Overseas, China’s gross domestic product held steady in the second quarter, expanding 6.9% year-over-year.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Consumer Discretionary shares paced the gains with retail leading the sector higher. Macy’s (M +3.09%) and Kohl’s (KSS +2.7%) rose. Procter & Gamble (PG +0.52%) edged higher with news Trian Fund Management will launch a proxy fight for a single board seat. In earnings, BlackRock (BLK -3.13%) fell as the asset manager missed estimates on the top and bottom lines. Blue Apron (APRN -10.46%) fell amid reports Amazon.com (AMZN +0.82%) is preparing to enter the meal kit market.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 6/32 to yield 2.31%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.2% to $45.99/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.5% to $1233.90/ounce.

Volume Cooling While Staying Above 50-Day Moving Average Line

Installed Building Products' (IBP -$0.10 or -0.19% to $52.20) is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($51.17). Volume totals have been lighter than average in recent weeks. Below that short-term average the recent low ($46.65 on 5/09/17) defines the next important support level.

IBP was last shown in this FSU section on 6/05/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Consolidating Near 50-Day Moving Average Line".  It reported earnings +35% on +33% sales revenues for the Mar '17 quarter, and 3 of the 4 prior quarterly comparisons had earnings increases well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong since its $11 IPO on 2/13/14. It was highlighted in the 2/27/17 mid-day report in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/08/16 high plus 10 cents (read here).

The high-ranked Building - Maintenance & Service firm has seen the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 226 in Mar '16 to 276 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 31.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. It currently has a Timeliness Rating of B and a Sponsorship Rating of B.
