Major Indices Pulled Back on Higher Volume

Stocks finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow was down 46 points to 21137. The S&P 500 lost 6 points to 2429 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 20 points to 6275. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of distributional pressure. Breadth was slightly negative as decliners led advancers by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 69 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 77 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend and there remains a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined for a consecutive session Tuesday amid uncertainty on the geopolitical front. Tensions rose on Monday after seven countries in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, severed relations with Qatar on accusations of its ties to terrorist groups. Looking ahead, investors await testimony by former FBI Director James Comey later this week. In economic news, a Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey revealed job openings increased to 6 million in April, the most since December 2000.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Consumer Discretionary shares led the losses with Kohl’s (KSS -5.8%) down. Macy’s (M -8.21%) fell after the CFO warned gross margins could be below prior guidance. In earnings, HD Supply Holdings (HDS -17.54%) as the industrial distributor’s quarterly profit came in below Street forecasts. Thor Industries (THO +10.11%) rallied after beating estimates on the top and bottom lines. In Technology, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD +7.03%) rose amid solid demand for its Polaris-based offerings in the gaming and mining markets.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 12/32 to yield 2.14%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.9% to $48.30/barrel. COMEX gold gained 1.2% to $1294.40/ounce.

Gold & Silver Index Posted Standout Gain

On Tuesday the Bank Index ($BKX -0.45%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.24%) both edged lower and the Retail Index's ($RLX -1.05%) loss also weighed on the major averages. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.35%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.17%) each posted a small gain but the Networking Index ($NWX -0.27%) edged lower. The Gold & Silver index ($XAU +5.13%) was a standout gainer while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.94%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.85%) both finished with smaller gains.

PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX -0.45%) met resistance at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line in recent weeks when trying to rebound. Gains above that important short-term average would help the market outlook improve since the financial groups are usually reliable leading indicators. The prior lows and its 200 DMA line define near term support where subsequent violations would raise concerns and would hurt the broader market outlook.

Computer Networking Firm Very Extended From Any Sound Base

Arista Networks Inc (ANET +$1.02 or +0.66% to $155.35) posted a 6th consecutive gain and hit another new all-time high today, getting very extended from any sound base. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($140.37) and prior lows define near-term support to watch on pullbacks.

It recently reported quarter as its Mar '17 earnings rose +37% on +39% sales revenues versus the year ago period. ANET has shown strong and steady increases in quarterly sales revenues while earnings have routinely been well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong, however, its history is limited since its $43 IPO in June of 2014.

Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks. It was last shown in this FSU section on 5/08/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Bullish Technical Action Following Recent Earnings"". ANET is up +65.6% since first highlighted at $93.80 in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2015 high plus 10 cents in the 11/21/16 mid-day report (read here). Along the way, a damaging loss on 1/17/17 with heavy volume raised concerns and triggered a technical sell signal. It halted its slide near prior highs in the $87 area and eventually rebounded above its 50 DMA line helping its outlook to improve.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 360 in Dec '15 to 476 Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The high-ranked Computer - Networking firm has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. Its small supply of 44.6 million shares (S criteria) in the public float may contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
