Major Indices Rose With Less Volume on Exchanges

For the week, the Dow climbed 2.3%, while the S&P 500 gained 2.4%. The Nasdaq posted a 2.7% weekly advance. Stocks finished mixed Friday. The Dow climbed 91 points to 24831, while the S&P 500 added 4 points to 2727. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 2 points to 7402. Volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange, revealing less institutional buying demand. Advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 89 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 100 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) slumped as the latest confirmed rally faced pressure, however healthy leadership continues to underpin the market. PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is perched -3% off its record high.

The major averages closed mostly higher, with the Dow notching a seven-day winning streak. On the data front, import prices rose 0.3%, below consensus forecasts for a 0.5% jump. Export prices increased 0.6% last month, topping a projected rise of 0.4%. A preliminary report from the University of Michigan showed consumer sentiment held steady in May. In central bank news, St. Louis President James Bullard delivered remarks suggesting interest rates should remain at current levels because rates may have already reached a “neutral” level that is not providing economic stimulus.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in negative territory. Telecom led advancers with Verizon (VZ +3.01%) up. Health Care also outperformed following President Trump’s highly anticipated speech on prescription drug prices. Technology lagged, dragged down Symantec (SYMC -33.10% ) tumbled after the security software company cut forward guidance and disclosed an internal audit. Chipmaker NVIDIA (NVDA -2.15%) amid investor concern surrounding a surge in demand for graphics chips from cryptocurrency miners.

Treasuries dipped slightly with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note up one basis point to 2.97%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.1% to $70.55/barrel. COMEX gold was off 0.2% to $1319.20/ounce despite a weaker dollar.

Biotech and Retail Indexes Rose

On Friday the Bank Index ($BKX +0.07%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.09%) both finished flat while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.29%) posted a small gain. The tech sector was mixed, led by the Biotech Index ($BTK +1.76%), meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.01%) finished flat and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.75%) fell. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.07%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.01%) both held their ground while the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.78%) fell.

PICTURED: The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.75%) pulled back on Friday after 5 consecutive gains. It found support at its 200-day moving average (DMA) line and rebounded above its 50 DMA line.

Encountered Distributional Pressure After Hitting New High

N V 5 Global Inc (NVEE -$0.20 or -0.34% to $59.35) encountered distributional pressure recently, pulling back near prior highs defining initial support in the $58-59 area. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($57.28) defines important ner-term support to watch on pullbacks.

Recently it reported earnings +51% on +48% sales revenues for the Mar '18 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record witrh the 4th quarter in a row above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its strong annual earnings (A criteria) history was previously noted.. NVEE was last shown in this FSU section on 4/09/18 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Perched Near High After 3 Strong Quarterly Comparisons". It was highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 10/31/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here).

This Hollywood, FL based Commercial Services / Consulting firm completed new Public Offerings on 5/22/15 and on 5/13/16, and none since. There are only 11 million shares outstanding (S criteria), which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 186 in Jun '17 to to 206 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
