Healthy Crop of Leaders Hitting New Highs Expands

Stocks finished higher Wednesday. The Dow added 182 points to 24542. The S&P 500 climbed 25 points to 2697 while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 73 points to 7339. Volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of greater institutional buying demand. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchangeLeadership improved as there were 93 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 59 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals swelled and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) slumped as the latest confirmed rally faced pressure, however healthy leadership continues to underpin the market. New buying efforts are justified only when all key criteria of the fact-based investment system are satisfied. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, but faces resistance after forming a series of lower highs in recent months. It recently found support at the 200 DMA line and above the prior lows.

The major averages edged upwards as Energy shares outperformed amid surging oil prices. NYMEX WTI crude added 3.0% to $71.15 amid growing investor concern that oil demand may outpace supplies after President Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal. On the data front, the core Producer Price Index (ex-food and energy) increased 0.2% in April, matching projections, but below the March 0.3% gain. In a separate release, MBA mortgage applications fell 0.4% in the prior week despite lower interest rates.

Nine of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished the session in positive territory. Energy shares paced gains as Exxon Mobil (XOM +2.36%) and Chevron (CVX +1.70%) rose in conjunction with higher oil prices. Financials also outperformed as treasury yields topped 3.0%. In earnings, Electronic Arts (EA  +5.75%) rose after the video game developer bested revenue projections. Walt Disney (DIS -1.79%) fell despite topping analyst estimates. Walmart (WMT -3.13%) was a notable decliner amid reports the $16 billion majority stake acquisition in Flipkart could negatively impact future earnings.

Treasuries were weaker with the yield on the 10-year note advancing three basis points to 3.00%. In commodities, COMEX gold was down 0.1% at $1311.90/ounce.

Volume-Driven Gain Challenged Prior High Following Earnings

Epam Systems Inc (EPAM +$7.42 or +6.35% to $124.32) finished strong after highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/13/18 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It gapped up today with a big volume-driven gain challenging its all-time high. Subsequent gains for new highs (N criteria) above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are needed to trigger a proper technical buy signal.

Bullish action came after the Computer - Tech Services firm reported Mar '18 earnings +29% on +31% sales revenues, above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Sequential quarterly comparisons show strong earnings with an encouraging acceleration in sales revenues growth. Annual earnings history (A criteria) remained strong after it was dropped from Featured Stocks list on 8/11/15. It was last shown in this FSU section on 8/11/15 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Fundamental and Technical Concerns Hurt Outlook".

Fundamentally, it still has a strong 94 Earnings Per Share Rating, well above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 462 in Jun '17 to 529 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 49.9 million shares (S criteria) in the pubic float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. Its Relative Strength rating of 87 is above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates.

Found prompt support at its 50 DMA line and remains perched near its all-time high. Due to report earnings news today after the market close, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings reports. Color code is changed to yellow with pivot point cited based on its 4/10/18 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are needed to trigger a technical buy signal. Last noted in the 4/16/18 mid-day reports - "This Israel-based Energy - Solar firm had a "breakaway gap" for a considerable volume-driven gain on 2/15/18 and tallied additional volume driven gains for new all-time highs. Bullish action came after it reported Dec '17 earnings +166% on +70% sales revenues, its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) with a great acceleration in its sales revenues growth rate. Disciplined investors may wait for a new base or secondary buy point to possibly develop and be noted in the weeks ahead." There are no Featured Stock Updates™ available for this stock at this time.
