Major Indices Finished Session With Little Change

Stocks finished little changed on Thursday. The Dow was up 2 points to 20858. The S&P 500 added 1 a point to 2364 and the Nasdaq Composite also gained a point to finish at 5838. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by more than 2-1 on the NYSE and by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 29 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 30 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the NYSE for the fourth consecutive session.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated in a choppy session as investors await tomorrow’s non-farm labor report. Overseas, the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged Thursday, as widely expected. President Mario Draghi stated in a press conference that while sentiment indicators suggest the cyclical recovery may be regaining momentum, measures of underlying inflation remain subdued. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 243,000, above the expected 238,000.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Industrials underperformed with American Airlines (AAL -3.48%) down. In earnings, Staples (SPLS -5.25%) fell as the office supplies retailer’s quarterly sales came in below Street forecast. Tailored Brands (TLRD -32.22%) tumbled after comparable store-sales missed analyst estimates. In the consumer space, e.l.f. Beauty (ELF +12.33%) rose as the cosmetics maker provided a stronger-than-expected full-year outlook. Health Care stocks advanced with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN +2.30%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 10/32 to yield 2.60%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 1.1% to $49.74/barrel, extending the previous session’s decline that brought prices to the lowest level since November. COMEX gold lost 0.6% to $1202.10/ounce.

Technical Damages Raised Concern and Triggered Technical Sell Signal

Thor Industries Inc (THO -$2.21 or -2.18% to $99.24) slumped near its prior low ($98.12 on 1/23/17) with today's 3rd consecutive damaging loss with above average volume. It triggered technical sell signals as it violated prior highs in the $108 area and also undercut its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It may find support and reclaim some lost ground, but only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line ($105.59) would help its outlook improve. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.

THO was last shown in this FSU section on 1/24/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Rose From Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line". It was highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 12/07/16 high plus 10 cents in the 1/24/17 mid-day report (read here). Subsequent volume-driven gains on 2/08/17 triggered a technical buy signal.

The high-ranked Building - Mobile/Mfg & RV firm Reported earnings +27% on +63% sales revenues for the Jan '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record. It reported earnings +54% on +66% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter, well above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been good. Return on Equity is reported at 23%, well above the 17% guideline.

It has earned a current Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of C. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 489 in Mar '16 to 582 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign (I criteria). Its small supply of only 48.9 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

G - Still holding its ground stubbornly and perched near all-time highs. Recently reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50 DMA line ($39.45) defines important near-term support where a subsequent violation would trigger a technical sell signal.
