Major Averages Quietly Ended The Week Higher

For the week, the Dow was up 0.9%, the S&P 500 added 0.6%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.4%. Stocks finished little changed on Friday. The Dow ticked up 2 points to 21005. The S&P 500 added 1 point to 2383 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 9 points to 5870. The volume totals reported were lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers and decliners were evenly matched on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 20 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 51 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics.  ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated in a choppy session following a speech from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. In prepared remarks, Yellen signaled the Fed will likely hike rates later this month to reflect a strengthening labor market and a rise in inflation. According to Bloomberg data, futures are currently pricing a 94% probability of a rate hike by the March FOMC meeting. On the data front, Markit’s survey of U.S. business activity expanded to 53.8 in February, below analyst expectations.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Consumer Staples shares underperformed with Kroger (KR -3.39%) down. Costco (COST -4.35%) slid as the warehouse retailer announced plans to raise its membership fees. In Technology, Nutanix (NTNX -26.09%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. Micron Technology (MU +3.52%) rose as the company raised its forward earnings guidance. On the M&A front, GNC Holdings (GNC +3.64%) rose amid reports of takeover speculation.

Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note flat to yield 2.48%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.6% to $53.21/barrel. COMEX gold ticked up 0.2% to $1235.10/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index retreated 0.8%.

Recent Low Defines Support Near Prior Highs

I E S Holdings Inc's (IESC -$0.25 or -1.28% to $19.25) prior low ($18.05 on 1/18/17) defines important support near prior highs. It has been consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Its Relative Strength rating at 73 remains below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates.

The high-ranked Building - Maintenance & Service firm was last shown in this FSU section on 1/19/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Violated 50-Day Moving Average Line and Now Testing Prior Highs".  Recently it reported Dec '16 quarterly earnings -33% on +27% sales revenues, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. It had reported very strong Sep '16 quarterly sales revenues and earnings increases. It was highlighted in yellow in the 11/23/16 mid-day report as it returned to the Featured Stocks list while noted - "Fundamentals remain strong. Recent volume-driven gains helped it rally to new highs and above the new pivot point cited based on its 9/06/16 high plus 10 cents."

IESC showed bullish action after dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 10/27/16. Following damaging volume-driven losses it found support at its 200-day moving average (DMA) line. Members were previously reminded - "Under the fact-based system a stock which was previously sold can be bought back again if strength returns." The usual sell rules apply if a stock is repurchased, and in the Certification the teach investors to make a 10% larger purchase than on the prior entry.

Its strong earnings track record included 5 previous quarterly earnings increases above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). In addition to that fact its sales revenues growth rate showed encouraging acceleration, helping it better match the fact-based investment system's guidelines. Annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong for the past 3 years.

Today it has a Timeliness rating of C, and its Sponsorship rating is currently a D. The number of top rated funds owning its shares rose from 52 in Dec '15 to 151 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.  Its small supply of only 21.5 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling

Y - Found support again near its 50 DMA line ($55.80). It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the 2/23/17 mid-day report (read here) and it was noted - "Subsequent gains for new highs with above average volume may trigger a convincing technical buy signal. Recently wedged to new highs with gains lacking great volume. Found support near its 50 DMA line while consolidating since a big 'breakaway gap' on 12/07/16 after reporting better than expected earnings +108% on +19% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter. G - Slumped below its 50 DMA line ($110) and closed near the session low. Further deterioration below recent low ($104.10 on 2/14/17) may trigger a more worrisome technical sell signal. Fundamentals through Dec '16 remain strong.
