Leadership Remains Healthy as Indices End Week on Positive Note

For the week, the Dow was down 0.5%, the S&P 500 lost 0.4%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.2%. Stocks finished higher on Friday. The Dow was up 44 points to 20902. The S&P 500 added 7 points to 2372 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 22 points to 5861. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 41 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 29 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE.

PICTURED: The 2-year chart of the S&P 500 Index shows it perched near record highs after a strong January-February rally.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages advanced on the session Friday following a better-than-expected jobs report. Non-farm payrolls grew 235,000 in February versus a projected 200,000 increase. The labor force participation rate was slightly higher from the previous month at 63.0%. Finally, the unemployment rate came in at 4.7%, in-line with expectations. According to Bloomberg data, futures are currently pricing a 100% probability of a rate hike at next week’s FOMC meeting.

Eight of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Consumer Discretionary stocks finished higher with Ulta Beauty (ULTA +4.6%) rallying as the beauty products retailer reported strong same-store sales in the quarter. Health Care shares outperformed with AbbVie (ABBV +2.14%) up after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. In Technology, VeriFone Systems (PAY -6.19%) fell as the payment systems company revised second-quarter guidance below Street forecasts. Shares of Finisar Corp (FNSR -22.69%) tumbled after missing estimates on the top and bottom line.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 7/32 to yield 2.58%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.7% to $48.43/barrel. COMEX gold finished little changed at $1203.00/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.6%.

Consolidating Above Support Following Breakout

Essent Group Ltd (ESNT +$0.23 or +0.66% to $35.10) is consolidating below its "max buy" level, staying above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and above prior highs defining important near-term support in the $33-34 area. Subsequent losses leading to violations may trigger technical sell signals.

ESNT finished strong after highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 12/12/16 high plus 10 cents in the 1/25/17 mid-day report (read here). It hit a new all-time high (N criteria) with a big gain backed by twice its average volume, well above the minimum of +40% above average volume needed to trigger a proper technical buy signal. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above prior highs and always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

The high-ranked Finance-Mrtg and Rel Svc firm's quarterly earnings have  been above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) and sales revenues increases in comparisons through Dec'16 have been strong. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been good since its $17 IPO on 10/31/13. It completed a new Public Offering on 11/19/14.

The number of top-ranted funds owning its shares rose from 317 in Mar '16 to 390 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days.
