Crude Retreated and Major Indices Ended Mixed

On Wednesday the Dow was down 69 points to 20855. The S&P 500 lost 5 points to 2362 and the Nasdaq Composite added 3 points to 5837. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by nearly 3-1 on the NYSE, but decliners led advancers by only 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 30 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 25 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the NYSE for the third consecutive session.

Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index slumped below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with a streak of losses. Prior lows define the next important support level.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated throughout the session as a decline in oil prices outweighed strong employment data. NYMEX WTI crude retreated 5.4% to $50.25/barrel, its worst daily performance in 13 months after U.S. crude inventories rose for ninth-straight week. On the data front, an ADP report showed that 298,000 workers were added to private payrolls in February, firmly above estimates of 187,000. Separately, wholesale inventories fell 0.2% in January, below expectations.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Energy stocks led the losses with Marathon Oil (MRO -8.66%) down. Industrials underperformed with Caterpillar (CAT -2.81%) losing amid a government report accusing the company of carrying out tax and accounting fraud. In the retail space, Urban Outfitters (URBN -2.60%) fell after quarterly revenue fell short of Street forecasts. Children’s Place (PLCE +18.27%) rallied as the company announced it was doubling its quarterly dividend. Consumer Discretionary shares advanced with H&R Block (HRB +14.88%) rising as the tax preparation firm reported a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

Treasuries declined after the robust employment report. The benchmark 10-year note was down 10/32 to yield 2.55%.In commodities, COMEX gold lost 0.6% to $1208.80/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.3%.

PICTURED: The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -2.49%) violated its 200-day moving average (DMA) line today. It found prompt support at 200 DMA line in September, and it is likely for support to show up near that important long-term average.

Hovering Near Highs But Latest Earnings Were Below Guidelines

Veritex Holdings Inc (VBTX +$0.01 or +0.04% to $28.38) has been stubbornly holding its ground and hovering below its "max buy" level. Prior highs in the $27 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($27.52) define important near-term support where violations would trigger technical sell signals. VBTX was last shown in this FSU section on 1/23/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Challenged Highs But Ended in Bottom Third of Intra-day Range".

It was highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 12/23/16 high plus 10 cents in the 1/23/17 mid-day report (read here). However, d
isciplined investors will observe that it was noted on 1/24/17 - "Reported Dec '16 quarterly earnings +17% on +26% sales revenues, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) for buy candidates, raising fundamental concerns."  The prior 12 quarterly comparisons had shown earnings increases versus the year ago period(s) well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been good, but it has a limited history since its Oct 2014 IPO at $13.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 18 in Jun '15 to 135 in Dec '16. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under only slight accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria). Its small supply of only 10.2 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

G - Still holding its ground stubbornly and perched near all-time highs. Recently reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50 DMA line ($39.45) defines important near-term support where a subsequent violation would trigger a technical sell signal.

Y - Consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($55.88) which has recently acted as a support level while encountering distributional pressure. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the 2/23/17 mid-day report (read here) and it was noted - "Subsequent gains for new highs with above average volume may trigger a convincing technical buy signal. Recently wedged to new highs with gains lacking great volume. Found support near its 50 DMA line while consolidating since a big 'breakaway gap' on 12/07/16 after reporting better than expected earnings +108% on +19% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter. Following its $16 IPO on 10/10/14 it completed Secondary Offerings on 2/05/15, 5/27/15, and 10/01/15. "
