Major Indices Pulled Back From Record Highs

Stocks finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow was down 29 points to 20924. The S&P 500 lost 6 points to 2368 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 15 points to 5833. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by more than 2-1 on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 25 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, matching the total of 25 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the NYSE for the second consecutive session.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating well above a multi-month upward trendline and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined Tuesday as investors weighed the prospects of tighter monetary policy and President Trump’s ability to implement his economic platform. On Monday, U.S. Republicans unveiled legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The proposal includes removing the requirement that most Americans have health insurance or pay a fine. On the data front, the Commerce Department reported the trade deficit widened to $48.5 billion, the highest level in nearly five years.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Health Care stocks finished lower amid the GOP’s ACA replacement bill. Biotech firms underperformed with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN -2.46%) down following President Trump’s latest pledge to drive down drug prices. In earnings, Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS -8.61%) fell after the retailer forecasted current-quarter profit below Street estimates. Shares of Weatherford International (WFT +12.56%) rose as the company named Mark McCullum as President and CEO. In M&A news, Nimble Storage (NMBL +46.28%) gapped up after agreeing to a $1 billion takeover bid from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE -1.08%).

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 3/32 to yield 2.51%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude slipped 0.2% to $53.11/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.8% to $1216.10/ounce.

Breakaway Gap Followed Very Strong Earnings Report

Momo Inc Ads (MOMO +$3.39 or +12.74% to $30.00) was highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high after a cup-with-handle base. It hit new all-time highs with a big "breakaway gap" triggering a technical buy signal after reporting greatly improved sales and earnings in the Dec '16 quarterly, its 3rd consecutive comparison with very strong results versus the year ago periods. Limited history remains a concern for this Chinese Internet - Content firm that completed its $14 IPO in Dec '14.

A breakaway gap has been repeatedly noted as the one exception where the usual limit can be stretched to allow for disciplined investors to buy as much as +10% above the pivot point. Longtime readers know that the regular limit above the pivot point is +5%. Risk increases the further one chases a stock above its pivot point as it increases the likelihood that an ordinary pullback of -7-8% might prompt one to sell based on the fact-based system's strict selling rules.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 39 in Mar '16 to 82 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a small supply (S criteria) of only 42.7 million shares in the public float.

G - Still holding its ground stubbornly and perched near all-time highs. Recently reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50 DMA line ($39.45) defines important near-term support where a subsequent violation would trigger a technical sell signal.

Y - Consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($55.88) which has recently acted as a support level while encountering distributional pressure. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the 2/23/17 mid-day report (read here) and it was noted - "Subsequent gains for new highs with above average volume may trigger a convincing technical buy signal. Recently wedged to new highs with gains lacking great volume. Found support near its 50 DMA line while consolidating since a big 'breakaway gap' on 12/07/16 after reporting better than expected earnings +108% on +19% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter. Following its $16 IPO on 10/10/14 it completed Secondary Offerings on 2/05/15, 5/27/15, and 10/01/15. "

G - Quietly consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($110). Deterioration below the 50 DMA line and below the recent low ($104.10 on 2/14/17) may trigger a more worrisome technical sell signal. Fundamentals through Dec '16 remain strong.

Y - Finished strong with 11 times average volume behind gain after big breakaway gap. Color code was changed to yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high after a cup-with-handle base when the mid-day report noted - "Hitting new all-time highs with a "breakaway gap" triggering a technical buy signal after reporting greatly improved sales and earnings in the Dec '16 quarterly, its 3rd consecutive comparison with very strong results versus the year ago periods. Limited history remains a concern for this Chinese Internet - Content firm that completed its $14 IPO in Dec '14." See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
