Major Averages Remain Perched at Record Highs

Stocks finished little changed on Monday. The Dow added 22 points to 23580. The S&P 500 fell a point to 2601. The Nasdaq Composite was off 10 points to 6878. Volume totals reported were much higher than Friday's shortened session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 61 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 56 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend.  Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.

U.S equities were mixed on “Cyber Monday” as investors remained focused on economic and tax reform updates scheduled for later this week. A report from CNBC stated the Senate is targeting Thursday for a vote on its tax bill. On the data front, a release today revealed that new home sales unexpectedly surged in October to the highest level in a decade. An additional release from the Dallas Fed revealed business activity eased in November from the prior month.

Six of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher with Telecom a notable outperformer. Shares of Verizon (VZ +1.38%) rose on positive analyst commentary. Energy stocks underperformed as Marathon Oil (MRO -4.30%) and Newfield Exploration (NFX -3.42%) fell in sympathy with oil prices. In Technology, Western Digital Corp (WDC -6.71%) and Square (SQ -16.05%) tumbled on negative analyst commentary. In M&A news, Time Inc. (TIME +9.47%) rose amid reports Meredith Corporation (MDP +10.74%) will acquire the company for $2.8 billion.

Treasuries were little changed with the yield on the 10-year note yield flat at 2.33%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude fell 1.7% to $57.93/ barrel. COMEX gold added 0.5% to $1293.30/ounce.

Recently Stalled After Reaching a New High

Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI $46.40) recently stalled near the new pivot point cited based on its 10/05/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by volume more than the minimum +40% above average volume threshold may clinch a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. A recent rebound above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with convincing volume-driven gains helped its outlook to improve. Prior lows in the $41-42 define the next important support level where further deterioration would raise more serious concerns.

OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 10/30/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Sell Signal Triggered by 50-Day Moving Average Violation on Higher Volume". After a new pivot point was cited based on its 8/01/17 high plus 10 cents, members were repeatedly reminded - "Recent gains above the latest pivot point did not meet the minimum +40% above average volume threshold necessary to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Confirming volume-driven gains would be a reassuring sign of fresh institutional buying demand."

Fundamentals remain strong. Recently it reported earnings +29% on +21% sales revenues for the Jul '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record and meeting the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). It has earned a very strong 97 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating.

The Retail - Discount & Variety firm traded up as much as +79.8% since highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 417 in Sep '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 61.4 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
