Dow Outperforms as Indices Reverse from Record Highs

Stocks finished mostly lower on Thursday. The Dow was up 85 points to 21796. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2475 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 40 points to 6382.  The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, generally indicative of increasing distributional pressure. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by nearly a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and by nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 71 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 74 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session as Technology stocks pulled back from record highs. Tech shares experienced weakness as investors appeared cautious despite strong earnings from companies in the space. Facebook (FB +2.92%) rose as robust quarterly results were boosted by greater advertising revenue for its mobile app. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 244,000, above the expected 240,000. Separately, durable goods orders increased 6.5% in June, above expectations.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Technology stocks underperformed with Apple (AAPL-1.89%) falling. F5 Networks (FFIV -7.16%) fell as quarterly revenue came in below Street forecasts. Elsewhere in earnings, Discover Financial (DFS -4.26%) sank after reporting a rise in credit card delinquency rates. Johnson Controls (JCI -7.3%) fell as the firm lowered its organic sales guidance. In Telecom, Verizon (VZ +7.68%) rose after adding 633,000 wireless retail customers during the quarter. ADP (ADP +9.11%) amid reports billionaire investor Bill Ackman has built a stake in the company.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 7/32 to yield 2.31%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.7% to $49.07/barrel. COMEX gold advanced 0.8% to $1259.50/ounce.

Extended Leader Encounters Distributional Pressure

Houlihan Lokey Inc (HLI -$0.92 or -2.38% to +$37.68) pulled back on higher volume today, a sign of distributional pressure. It had gapped up on the prior session hitting a new high, getting very extended from prior highs in the $35-36 area that define initial support to watch on pullbacks. It is well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($35.06) which also defines near-term support where a damaging violation would raise concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.

HLI was last shown in this FSU section on 6/19/17 with an annotated graph, "Gapped Up and Nearly Challenged Prior High". It was highlighted in yellow in the 5/10/17 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 3/31/17 high plus 10 cents after an orderly flat base. Its considerable gain backed by +174% above average volume had triggered a technical buy signal.

The high ranked Finance - Invest Bank//Broker firm reported earnings +43% on +20% sales revenues for the Jun '17 quarter, and 3 of the past 4 quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earning guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings growth (A criteria) history is a good match with the fact-based investment system's guidelines. It has an Earnings Per share rating of 97.

It has a Timeliness rating of B and a Sponsorship rating of C. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 165 in Jun '16 to 251 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 23.3 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Pulled back on even higher volume today raising concerns while slumping back into the prior base and testing its 50 DMA line ($60.15). Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. More damaging losses would raise concerns and the prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17) defines the next important support to watch.

Y - Color code is changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based in 5/22/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Consolidating above its 50 DMA line, building on a third-stage base. Prior low ($35.02 on 6/15/17) defines the next important chart support level where a violation would raise more serious concerns. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
