Leadership Expanded as Major Indices Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher Tuesday. The Dow added 9 points to 24884 while the S&P 500 gained 7 points to 2728. The Nasdaq was up 41 points to 7372. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by more than a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by nearly a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as rising new 52-week high totals outnumbered shrinking new 52-week lows totals on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE. There were 57 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 39 on the prior session. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is consolidating below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. The major indices (M criteria) have seen the latest uptrend come under pressure as several distribution days were noted. New buying efforts may be justified under the fact-based investment system, however, only when all key criteria of the fact-based investment system are satisfied. The Featured Stocks Pageprovides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
U.S. equities advanced despite lingering concerns regarding trade policy. Stocks initially rallied this morning following news that North Korea may be willing to discuss denuclearization. Further concerns surrounding potential tariffs on steel and aluminum pared early gains. Reports this morning suggested White House economic advisor Gary Cohn may resign in protest of prospective tariffs. On the economic front, a release showed factory orders fell 1.4% in January, in line with expectations. A separate report showed durable goods orders decreased 3.6% in January, better than the previously reported 3.7% drop.
Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory with Utilities and Health Care the only laggards. Materials paced gains in sympathy with a rise in metals prices. Consumer Discretionary shares outperformed with Netflix (NFLX +3.24%) and Walt Disney (DIS +1.48%) gaining. Chipmakers also provided a tailwind for the market, as NVIDIA (NVDA +2.76%) rose. In earnings, Target (TGT -4.46%) fell after posting fourth-quarter profit results below analyst projections.
Treasuries finished essentially unchanged with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note flat at 2.88%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.2% to $62.45/barrel. COMEX gold rose 1.1% to $1335.00/ounce amid a weaker dollar.

Recently Profitable Internet - Content Firm Rallied to New High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Sendgrid Inc (SEND +$1.41 or +5.18% to $28.64) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/27/18 high in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It hit a new high with today's gain backed by +80% above average volume, triggering a technical buy signal while rising from a 9-week cup-with-high-handle pattern.
The company showed strong sales revenues and earnings increases in quarterly comparisons through Dec '17. It had a profitable FY '17 after years of shrinking losses of 29 cents per share in FY '14, a loss of 11 cents per share in FY '15, and a loss of 3 cents per share in FY '16. Some concerns remain due to its limited annual earnings (A criteria) history since its $16 IPO on 11/15/17.
There are only 15.4 million shares in the public float (S criteria) and only 94 top-rated funds that reportedly own its shares. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of A. |

G - Met resistance recently and it remains below its 50 DMA line ($47.45). The recent low ($43.73 on 2/06/18) defines near term support where a violation would raise greater concerns. Earnings +21% for the Dec '17 quarter were below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) raising fundamental concerns.

Y - Holding its ground today. Finished strong on the prior session after highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 11/24/17 high plus 10 cents. Hit a new all-time high triggering a technical buy signal with a big gain backed by more than twice average volume while rising from a choppy "late-stage" base. Recent quarterly comparisons through Dec '17 showed strong sales revenues growth acceleration and solid earnings increases versus the year-ago periods. Limited annual earnings (A criteria) history remains a concern, yet it had a profitable FY '16 following its $9 IPO in Nov '15. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and an annotated graph.

Y - Hit a new high with +80% above average volume behind its gain, triggering a technical buy signal while rising from a 9-week cup-with-high-handle pattern. Finished strong after highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/27/18 high. Showed strong sales revenues and earnings increases in quarterly comparisons through Dec '17. Had a profitable FY '17 after years of shrinking losses. Concerns remain due to its limited annual earnings (A criteria) history since its $16 IPO on 11/15/17. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
