Dow Hits New Record With 7th Consecutive Gain

Stocks finished mixed on Wednesday. The Dow was up 52 points to 22016. The S&P 500 ticked up a point to 2477 and the Nasdaq Composite traded flat at 6362. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 31 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 50 on the prior session. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE but the totals were nearly even on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session as investors digested mixed corporate earnings reports. The Dow notched another record high Wednesday, climbing above the milestone 22,000 point mark for the first time ever. It took the blue-chips index just 107 trading days to surge to 22,000 from 21,000. On the data front, an ADP report showed that 178,000 workers were added to private payrolls in July, below estimates of 190,000.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Technology stocks outperformed as shares of Apple boosted the sector higher. Apple (AAPL +4.73%) rose as the tech giant reported quarterly results that firmly beat Street expectations. Elsewhere in earnings, Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD -10.77%) fell after lowering full-year production growth guidance. Humana (HUM +4.47%) rose as the company posted better-than-expected quarterly profit. In Health Care, Illumina (ILMN +14.83%) rose after increasing its full-year forecast. Cardinal Health (CAH -8.20%) sank as the pharmaceutical distributor’s early 2019 EPS guidance came in below analyst estimates. Macom Tech Solution Holdings (MTSI -25.48%) gapped down for a damaging volume-driven loss violating its 50 and 200 DMA lines triggering technical sell signals. It reported earnings +40% on +37% sales revenues for the Jun '17 quarter, but gave discouraging guidance.

Treasuries finished mostly lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 3/32 to yield 2.26%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 0.7% to $49.53/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.5% to $1266.00/ounce.

Slump Below 50-Day Moving Average Line Raises Concerns

Veeva Systems Inc Cl A (VEEV -$2.62 or -4.06% to $61.98) undercut its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($62.83) today and its color code was changed to green. More damaging losses would raise greater concerns. Disciplined investors will note that it did not produce the necessary volume-driven gains for a new 52-week high needed to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

VEEV was last shown in this FSU section on 6/23/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Rebounding Since Testing Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line". It was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 11/30/16 high plus 10 cents in the 3/16/17 mid-day report (read here).

The high-ranked Computer Software - Medical firm reported earnings +47% on +32% sales revenues for the April '17 quarter, and the past 3 quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. It has the highest possible 99 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rank and it has a 95 Relative Strength (RS) rating. Both of those ratings must be above 80 for a stock to meet the guidelines for consideration.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 340 in Mar '16 to 528 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 0.8 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under some distributional pressure over the past 50 days.

G - Due to report Jun '17 quarterly earnings news before the open on Thursday, 8/03/17. Still sputtering below its 50 DMA line ($57.54). A rebound above the 50 DMA line and subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point are needed for its outlook to improve and for a new (or add-on) technical buy signal to be triggered. More damaging losses would raise greater concerns and trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.

Y - Retreating from its high toward its 50 DMA line ($99.59). Encountered distributional pressure after highlighted in yellow in the 7/31/17 mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its high hit on 5/01/17 plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains and a strong finish above its pivot point may clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Quarterly and annual earnings (C and A criteria) history has been strong. Small supply of only 6 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and an annotated graph.

G - Its Relative Strength Rating has slumped to 67, below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Color code is changed to green while sputtering below its 50 DMA line ($116.77). Reported Jun '17 quarterly earnings +42% on +11% sales revenues, continuing its strong earnings track record. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal which could mark the beginning of a new leg up.

Y - Reported Jun '17 earnings +23% on +45% sales revenues, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Found support at its 50 DMA line ($39.13) recently and any damaging losses violating it or the recent lows would trigger technical sell signals.

Y - Posted a gain today with above average volume, rising within close striking distance of its 52-week high. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Near-term support is its 50 DMA line ($92.91) and recent lows in the $91-92 area. Due to report Jun '17 quarterly earnings after the close on 8/03/17, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news.

Y - Consolidating just above its 50 DMA line ($61.18). Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. More damaging losses would raise concerns and the prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17) defines the next important support to watch.

Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Consolidating above its 50 DMA line, building on a third-stage base.
