The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on Monday as investors prepare for another busy week of corporate earnings releases. Of the 292 S&P 500 firms that have reported as of Monday morning, 72% have topped revenue projections, while 77% have cleared expectations on the bottom line. On the data front, pending home sales rose 1.5% in June, above expectations. In a separate release, Chicago’s PMI declined to 58.9 in July, from 65.7 last month.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. In M&A news, Discovery Communications (DISCA -8.21%) after agreeing to acquire Scripps Network (SNI +0.58%) for $14.6 billion. Charter Communications (CHTR +5.85%) rose amid takeover speculation. Elsewhere in stock news, Tesla (TSLA -3.46%) fell as CEO Elon Musk warned of “production hell” for six months as the company ramps up its production rate. Boeing (BA +0.49%) rose after announcing it expects a record number of aircraft orders from India. In the consumer space, Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ -21.16%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries finished little changed with the benchmark 10-year note trading flat at 2.29%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 1.2% to $50.29/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.4%.

Small Supply of Shares and Closed In Lower Half of Intra-day Range

Heska (HSKA +$2.74 or +2.57% to $109.54) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its high hit on 5/01/17 plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It posted a 6th consecutive gain, hitting new multi-year highs, but encountered distributional pressure and closed in the lower half of its intra-day range. Subsequent confirming gains and a strong finish above its pivot point may help to clinch a convincing technical buy signal.

Quarterly and annual earnings (C and A criteria) history has been strong. Small supply of only 6 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Quarterly earnings increases through the Jun  '17 quarter were above the +25% minimum earnings (C criteria) guideline. Since a downturn and loss in FY '13 the company's annual earnings (A criteria) increases have been strong. The company hails from the Medical - Products industry group which has a strong 94 Group Relative Strength Rating, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.
The number of top-rated funds owning an interest rose from 184 in Sep '16 to 263 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.

Near-term support is its 50 DMA line ($92.66) and recent lows in the $91-92 area. Due to report Jun '17 quarterly earnings on 8/02/17 and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news.

Y - Pulled back on even higher volume today raising concerns while slumping back into the prior base and testing its 50 DMA line ($60.15). Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. More damaging losses would raise concerns and the prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17) defines the next important support to watch.
