Nasdaq Composite Index Hit New High as Major Indices Ended Mixed

Stocks finished mostly lower on Monday. The Dow was down 66 points to 21513. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2469 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 23 points to 6410. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners outnumbered advancers by about 4-3 on the NYSE while advances led decliners by 8-7 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 58 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 51 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals again easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is hovering near its record high, consolidating above prior highs and well above its 50-day moving average line.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and the solid new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session as investors await a big week of earnings reports. Approximately 180 S&P 500 companies are scheduled to release quarterly results this week including tech giants Facebook, Amazon.com and Google-parent Alphabet. On the data front, research firm Markit revealed that U.S. manufacturing PMI expanded to 53.2 while the services sector came in with a 54.2 reading in July. Separately, existing home sales fell 1.8% last month, below expectations.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. In earnings, Hasbro (HAS -9.46%) slid as the toymaker reported a weaker-than-expected rise in quarterly sales. Halliburton (HAL -4.21%) fell despite beating estimates on the top and bottom lines. In the consumer space, Hibbett Sports (HIBB -33.50%) sank as the company stated it expects second-quarter sales to fall 10% due to a “challenging” retail environment. Blue Apron (APRN +13.13%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. In M&A news, WebMD (WBMD +19.77%) rose after agreeing to a $2.8 billion takeover bid from private-equity firm KKR.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 5/32 to yield 2.26%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.4% to $46.42/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.1%.

Faces Near-Term Resistance Up to $73 Due to Overhead Supply

Dave & Buster's Ent Inc (PLAY -$0.89 or -1.33% to $65.96) sputtered back below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($67.09) raising concerns. It faces near-term resistance due to overhead supply up through the $73 level. Prior lows in the $64 area define important near-term support to watch where more damaging losses would trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.

The Retail - Restaurant firm was last shown in this FSU section on 6/12/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Perched Near Record High After Solid April '17 Quarterly Results". It reported earnings +36% on +16% sales revenues for the April '17 quarter, an improvement after the Jan '17 comparisons was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria).

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 310 in Mar '16 to 432 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 41.5 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been strong. Currently it has a B Timeliness Rating and a B Sponsorship Rating. Following its $16 IPO on 10/10/14 it completed Secondary Offerings on 2/05/15, 5/27/15, and 10/01/15.

G - Sputtered back below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($67.09) raising concerns. It faces near-term resistance due to overhead supply up through the $73 level. Prior lows in the $64 area define important near-term support to watch where more damaging losses would trigger a worrisome technical sell signal. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.

Y - Pulled back today after recent gains lacking volume conviction. A new pivot point was cited based on its 6/02/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains and a strong close above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line ($41.42) defines support above recent lows in the $37-38 area.

Y - Poised for a best-ever close with a big gain today with higher volume while approaching its pivot point. Its 50 DMA line ($59.85) and prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17) define near-term support to watch. Gains above the pivot point backed by more than +40% above average volume may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

G - Nearly challenged its prior high ($45.95 on 5/22/17) with today's early gain after gapping up. Consolidating above its 50 DMA line, building on a third-stage base. Prior low ($35.02 on 6/15/17) defines the next important chart support level where a violation would raise more serious concerns.
