Leadership Wanes as Major Indices Sputter

U.S. equities finished mixed on Wednesday. The Dow added 59 points to 24083, marking its first gain in five sessions. The S&P 500 climbed 4 points to 2639 while the Nasdaq Composite fell 3 points to 7003. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of less intensity behind the selling from large institutional investors. Breadth was slightly negative as decliners led advancers by nearly a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and by more than a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange.  Leadership waned as there were only 8 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 30 on the prior session. New 52-week lows totals expanded and outnumbered shrinking new 52-week highs totals on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) have slumped as the latest confirmed rally has come under pressure. New buying efforts are justified only when all key criteria of the fact-based investment system are satisfied. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index has slumped back below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and it finished Wednesday's session -8.1% off its January 26th record highThe 200 DMA line and prior lows define important near-term support for the benchmark index.

The major averages rebounded from early session lows and finished little changed amid a deluge of corporate earnings releases. Increased investor concern over higher treasury yields, and Caterpillar (CAT +0.52%) CEO’s suggesting that their first-quarter earnings report might be the “high water mark” for the year are cited as the main catalysts to the recent increase in market volatility. On the data front, the lone economic release showed that mortgage applications dipped 0.2% in the prior week.

Eight of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher. Boeing (BA +4.19%) rose after the jet maker easily surpassed analyst earnings projections and raised full year guidance. Facebook (FB $159.69) was unchanged ahead of its earnings release after the close. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK -3.74%) fell after the drug maker revealed lighter than expected sales figures. Shares of Norfolk Southern Corp (NSC +8.14%) chugged higher after the rail transportation company topped estimates on both the top and bottom line.

Treasuries were weaker as the yield on the benchmark 10-year note advanced three basis points to 3.02%. In commodities, WTI crude climbed 0.4% to $67.98/barrel. COMEX gold was off 0.8% to $1321.20/ounce amid a stronger dollar.

On Wednesday the Retail Index ($RLX +0.17%) eked out a small gain while the Bank Index ($BKX -0.05%) finished flat and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.71%) fell. The tech sector had a negative bias as the Biotech Index ($BTK -0.94%) again led the retreat while the Networking Index ($NWX -0.45%) followed and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.12%) also ended slightly lower. Commodity-linked groups were mixed as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.97) fell while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.33%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.45%) both ended higher.

Perched Near All-Time High Building a Short New Base

Healthequity Inc (HQY +$0.45 or +0.69% to $65.56) has been hovering near its all-time high, and volume totals have cooled while building a short new base. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($60.41) defines near term support above prior highs. HQY was last shown in this FSU section on 3/22/18 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Bullish Action Followed Latest Earnings Report".

It reported earnings +57% on +29% sales revenues for the Jan '18 quarter versus the year ago period, continuing its strong earnings track record. HQY's fundamentals remain strong, as the past 4 quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) and underpinned by strong sales revenues increases.

Members were previously reminded - "Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price, knowing they can always buy back any stock if strength returns."  It has managed a bumpy climb that may have shaken out many investors since triggering a technical buy signal with a gain above the new pivot point with +90% above average volume when highlighted in the 2/20/18 mid-day report (read here).

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 369 in Dec '16 to 421 in Mar '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.9 is also an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a fairly small supply of only 61 million shares (S criteria) outstanding, which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. It currently has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B.

The Commercial Services - Outsourcing industry group currently has a Group Relative Strength Rating of 70, however there are other strong leaders in the group hitting new highs, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. It completed its $14 IPO on 7/31/14 followed by an additional Public Offering on 5/05/15 and Secondary Offerings on both 10/20/16 and 9/23/15.

Consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($250.71). Found support when recently sputtering near the prior low ($226.61 on 2/06/18). Y - Encountered distributional pressure on the prior session after challenging its all-time high. Recent gains lacked great volume conviction as it wedged up above the new pivot point cited based on its 2/28/18 high plus 10 cents. Gains above a stock's pivot point must have more than +40% above average volume to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Very little resistance remains due to overhead supply up to the $569 level. The 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch above the recent lows ($480).

Y - Pulling back today for a 3rd consecutive small loss on light or near average volume. Stalled after recently rallying to new highs with an impressive streak of volume-driven gains. Prior highs in the $58-60 area define initial support to watch above its 50 DMA line.

Today's loss undercut the prior low ($44.94 on 4/06/18) raising greater concerns. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. A big loss on the prior session with above average volume violated its 50 DMA line ($49.00) triggering a technical sell signal. A prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve.
