Stocks were mixed Thursday. The Dow was up 9 points to 22026. The S&P 500 lost 5 points to 2472 and the Nasdaq Composite slid 22 points to 6340. The volume totals reported were slightly higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 34 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 31 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), and new highs totals have been a sign of a healthy market. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated as investors gauged economic news and earnings reports. Initial jobless claims dipped 3,000 to 240,000 in the most recent week, below the consensus forecast of 243,000. Separately, Markit reported that U.S. services PMI increased to 54.7 in July, better than the expected 54.2. ISM’s non-manufacturing gauge, on the other hand, slipped to 53.9 vs the anticipated 56.9.

Eight out of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished the session lower. Energy shares lagged amid a drop in crude prices while Industrials outperformed. In earnings news, Metlife (MET -3.57%) and Prudential (PRU -4.30%) fell after each posted disappointing quarterly results. Tesla (TSLA +6.51%) rose as the carmaker beat expectations on the top and bottom line. Insurer Aetna (AET +2.46%) rose after its quarterly release also topped Wall Street projections. Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA -24.00%) fell, its worst session since 1998, as the company reported lower-than-expected profits and reduced its full-year guidance.

Treasuries were up along the curve with the benchmark 10-year note gaining 15/32 to yield 2.22%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 1.3% to $48.94/barrel. COMEX gold declined 0.2% to $1269.30/ounce.

Y - Retreating from its high toward its 50 DMA line ($99.59). Encountered distributional pressure after highlighted in yellow in the 7/31/17 mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its high hit on 5/01/17 plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains and a strong finish above its pivot point may clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Quarterly and annual earnings (C and A criteria) history has been strong. Small supply of only 6 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and an annotated graph.

Reported Jun '17 quarterly earnings +42% on +11% sales revenues, continuing its strong earnings track record. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal which could mark the beginning of a new leg up.

Y - Posted a gain today with above average volume, rising within close striking distance of its 52-week high. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Near-term support is its 50 DMA line ($92.91) and recent lows in the $91-92 area. Due to report Jun '17 quarterly earnings after the close on 8/03/17, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news.

Y - Consolidating just above its 50 DMA line ($61.18). Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. More damaging losses would raise concerns and the prior low ($56.20 on 6/29/17) defines the next important support to watch.

Y - Touched a new high today then reversed into the red. Still within close striking distance of the new pivot point cited based in 5/22/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Consolidating above its 50 DMA line, building on a third-stage base. Prior low ($35.02 on 6/15/17) defines the next important chart support level where a violation would raise more serious concerns.
