Leadership Waned as Indices Ended Mixed

Stocks finished mixed on Tuesday. The Dow traded flat at 21409. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2425 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 16 points to 6193. The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and slightly lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a very narrow margin on the NYSE and the mix was nearly even on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 25 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 40 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE while new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange.

The major averages (M criteria) have seen their uptrend recently come under pressure. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy level of market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs), however the new highs totals have dried up in recent days. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. ThFeatured Stocks Pagelists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated in a choppy session as investors digested central bank and political news. Equities traded in a narrow range Tuesday but turned negative after Donald Trump Jr. released emails about setting up a meeting with a Russian lawyer. Stocks recovered however after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the Senate is delaying its August recess as it faces a crowded legislative agenda. In central bank news, Cleveland President Lael Brainard stated the Fed will likely act “soon” to begin running off its $4.5 trillion bond portfolio as long as the economy cooperates.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Financials led the losses ahead of Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s semi-annual testimony before Congress on Wednesday. Consumer shares underperformed with Amazon.com (AMZN -0.23%) edging lower. PepsiCo (PEP -0.46%) fell despite reporting better-than-expected quarterly results.

In Technology, Western Digital (WDC +2.78%) rose amid reports the firm has matched best offers from rivals for Toshiba’s chip unit. Snap (SNAP -8.95%) slid after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.

Treasuries finished higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 5/32 to yield 2.35%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.6% to $45.11/barrel. COMEX gold ticked up 0.2% to $1215.80/ounce.

Y - Color code is changed to yellow with new pivot point based on its 10/10/16 all-time high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal which could mark the beginning of a considerable new leg up. Volume totals have been mostly below average in recent weeks while holding its ground in a tight range perched within close striking distance of its all-time high. Its 50 DMA line ($115.05) defines near-term support to watch above recent lows in the $112-113 area.
