Major Indices Notch Additional Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks ended higher Monday. The Dow gained 56 points to 24386. The S&P 500 advanced 8 points to 2659. The Nasdaq Composite added 35 points to 6875.. Volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE but decliners led advancers by a 5-4 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 45 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 44 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index wedged higher to close at a new record high. Recent gains have lacked great volume conviction.
The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.
U.S. equities started the week off on a positive note as Technology and Energy shares lifted the markets higher. The Federal Reserve garnered attention during today’s session, as the FOMC begins its two day policy meeting tomorrow and is widely expected to hike rates for the third time this year. On the data front, a report revealed U.S. job openings unexpectedly cooled in October from a record level in the month prior.
Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors ended higher. Technology paced gains as Apple (AAPL +1.95%) following news the company will acquire music recognition app Shazam. Energy stocks outperformed Haliburton Co (HAL +2.66%). Discount brokers were notable decliners on the session as E-Trade (ETFC -1.47%) and Charles Schwab Corp (SCHW -1.30%). Consumer Staples lagged as Kimberly-Clark Corp (KMB -1.35%). In Telecom, Verizon (VZ +1.47%) on news they extended their partnership with the NFL. CenturyLink Inc. (CTL +8.18%) on positive analyst comments.
Treasuries were little changed Monday. The yield on the 10-year note was flat at 2.39%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.0% to $57.95. COMEX gold lost 0.3% $1244.20.
