Distributional Pressure Intensified as Leadership Evaporated

Stocks finished lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 204 points to 21844. The S&P 500 lost 35 points to 2438 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 135 points to 6216, both violating their respective 50-day moving average lines. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of even greater distributional pressure from large financial institutions. Breadth was solidly negative as decliners led advancers by a 6-1 margin on the NYSE and more than 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 16 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 24 on the prior session. New 52-week lows totals expanded and solidly outnumbered shrinking new highs totals on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with a 3rd consecutive loss on increasing volume. The major averages (M criteria) prior uptrend has come under pressure while leadership has quickly evaporated.

Any sustainable rally requires market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). In weak markets investors should raise cash and reduce exposure to stocks by selling individual issues on a case-by-case basis as they trigger technical sell signals.  ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The Dow declined for a third straight session as tensions between the United States and North Korea persisted Thursday. Earlier in the week, President Donald Trump warned North Korea regarding the country’s threats made against the U.S. In fixed income, Treasuries finished higher as investors continued to seek perceived safe haven assets. On the data front, producer prices fell 0.1% in July, below expectations of a 0.1% increase. Separately, initial jobless claims came in at 244,000, above the expected 240,000.

Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Technology stocks led the losses with Apple (AAPL -3.59%) retreating from its record high. Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI -26.70%) tumbled after the technology services provider suspended its dividend. Consumer Discretionary shares underperformed amid weakness in the retail space. Macy’s (M -10.25%) and Kohl’s (KSS -5.80%) fell. Elsewhere in earnings, Perrigo (PRGO +15.78%) rose as the company beat estimates on the top and bottom lines. Live Nation Entertainment (LYV +5.63%) rose after concerts and advertising results came in ahead of consensus.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 12/32 to yield 2.20%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 2.3% to $48.40/barrel. COMEX gold gained 1% to $1285.50/ounce.

Quietly Consolidating Above 50 Day Moving Average Near High

Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI -$0.75 or -1.70% to $43.45) fell for a 4th consecutive session, slumping near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($42.76). It recently has encountered distributional pressure after making limited headway above the latest pivot point with gains that lacked sufficient volume conviction to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. More damaging losses would raise concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.

OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 6/29/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Recently Found Support Near 50-Day Moving Average". Fundamentals remain strong. Recently it reported Apr '17 quarterly earnings +25% on +17% sales revenues, meeting the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). It still has a very strong 96 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating. The Retail - Discount & Variety firm traded up as much as +40.5% since highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high plus 10 cents in the 3/27/17 mid-day report (read here).

OLLI was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 372 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 61.1 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Pulling back this week with losses on average volume after recently wedging higher with gains lacking great volume conviction. Failed to produce decisive gains above the new pivot point cited based in 5/22/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line ($40.58) defines the next important chart support level where a violation would raise more serious concerns.
