Indices Pulled Back From Record Highs

Stocks finished lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 112 points to 21,002. The S&P 500 lost 14 points to 2,381 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 42 points to 5,861. The volume totals reported were lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by an 11-4 margin on the NYSE and more than 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 51 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 113 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted yet solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics.  ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages halted their upward trajectory a day after the Dow climbed above 21,000 for the first time. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 223,000, the lowest level since March 1973. In stock news, Snap (SNAP +44%) rallied in its first trading session; well above the $17/share IPO price.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished the session in red territory. Financials underperformed with JP Morgan (JPM -1.56%) and Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB -3.51%) falling. Airline stocks led Industrials lower with United Continental (UAL -2.80%) ending lower. In earnings, Kroger (KR -4.34%) sank as same-store sales fell for the first time in 10 years. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD -3.72%) fell after the brewer reported its first decline in annual profit in a decade. Shares of Monster Beverage (MNST +12.76%) rose as strong demand for energy drinks boosted fourth-quarter revenue.

Treasuries continued their recent descent after dovish comments from Fed Governor Jerome Powell. The benchmark 10-year note retreated 8/32 to yield 2.48%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude is fell 2.2% to $52.66/barrel. COMEX gold is declined 1.2% to $1235.10/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index climbed 0.4% against its peers.

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -2.01%) and Bank Index ($BKX -2.07%) both fell while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.02%) finished flat on ThursdayThe tech sector was unanimously lower as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.47%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.11%), and the Networking Index ($NWX -0.97%) fell. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.51%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.12%), and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -4.79%) fell.
