Breadth Positive But Volume Lighter Behind Indices' Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow jumped 332 points, while the S&P 500 rose 1.1% to a fresh all-time high. The Nasdaq Composite rallied 1.2%, also closing at a new record level for the first time in nearly two weeks. The volume totals were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 63 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 42 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows totals which were in the single digits on both exchanges. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria) with healthy leadership provided by many stocks hitting new highs. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions based based on the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is approaching its prior high with 4 consecutive gains backed by lighter volume.
U.S. stocks pushed higher for a fourth consecutive day, as investors assessed corporate earnings results and better-than-expected economic data releases. On the data front, initial jobless claims data showed the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits declined to 779,000 in week ending January 30, lower than projections looking for an 830,000 uptick and the prior period's downwardly revised 812,000 figure. Market participants will now await the highly anticipated monthly jobs report, which will be released Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Treasuries were mixed, with longer dated yields extending their recent advance. The 10-year note yield added one basis point to 1.14%, while the 30-year bond climbed to its highest level in nearly a year. In commodities, WTI crude rose 1.2% to $56.33/barrel. Gold lost 2.2% to $1792.20/ounce amid a stronger dollar.
Ten of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished in positive territory, with the Materials group bucking the uptrend. The Technology group was a notable outperformer, with Apple (AAPL +2.58%) on reports the iPhone maker is close to finalizing a deal with carmaker Hyundai to produce a self-driving electric vehicle. In earnings, Qualcomm (QCOM -8.83%) gapped down violating its 50-day moving average line after the chipmaker's sales figures disappointed consensus estimates. eBay (EBAY +5.31%) hit a record high after topping analysts' expectations on both the top and bottom line. PayPal (PYPL +7.36%) also hit a record high after its earnings and revenue figures surpassed Wall Street's projections amid a 39% year-over-year uptick in payment volume.

Y - Held its ground today following big volume-driven gain on the prior session. A new pivot point was cited based on its 12/22/20 high plus 10 cents. Faces little resistance due to overhead supply up to the $1,285 level. Subsequent gains and a close above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Found prompt support near its 50 DMA line ($1,129).
