Major Indices Were Mixed and Ended the Week With Less Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow fell 179 points, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.1%, pushing to another record high. Despite the mixed session on Wall Street, all three major averages ended the four-day week higher. The Dow rose 0.6%, while the S&P 500 jumped 1.9%. The Nasdaq Composite posted a 4.2% weekly advance as technology and other growth oriented stocks outperformed this week. The volume totals were mixed, higher than the prior session on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 52 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 66 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still easily outnumbered the new 52-week lows totals which were in the single digits on both exchanges for a 3rd consecutive session. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria). Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions based based on the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is hovering near its record high encountering some distributional pressure. U.S. equities finished mostly lower on Friday, as investors took stock of a robust weekly rally and digested economic data. Eight of 11 S&P 500 sectors ended in negative territory, with Communication Services along with the defensive sectors Real Estate and Utilities bucking the downtrend. The Energy group was a notable laggard, amid a 1.9% drop in WTI crude prices. In earnings, IBM (IBM -9.91%) slumped after revenue fell for a fourth consecutive quarter and the company declined to provide full-year guidance. Intel (INTC -9.29%) fell despite beating on the top and bottom line.
On the data front, a flash reading from research firm Markit showed business activity in the U.S. is expanding at faster pace in January compared to the prior month. Notably, manufacturing PMI climbed to 59.1, above consensus estimates of 56.5 and to an all-time high. Meanwhile, a preliminary composite PMI reading for the Eurozone showed the region’s private sector activity dipped further into contractionary territory this month. A separate domestic update revealed existing home sales in December unexpectedly rose 0.7%, reaching the highest level since 2006. Treasuries advanced, with the yield on the 10-year note declining two basis points to 1.08%.

Biotech and Oil Services Indexes Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.68%), Bank Index ($BKX -0.20%), and Retail Index ($RLX -0.28%) each suffered a small loss and dragged the major indices lower. The Biotech Index ($BTK +1.23%) led the tech sector while the Networking Index ($NWX +0.19%) also inched higher, but the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.84%) was a clear laggard as it lost ground. The Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.43%) posted a gain while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.34%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.77%) both edged lower.
PICTURED: The Biotech Index ($BTK +1.23%) recently traded above its July 2020 high.

50-Day Moving Average and Prior Lows Define Near-Term Support
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Yeti Holdings Inc (YETI -$1.44 or -2.01% to $70.21) is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($67.53) which defines important support to watch along with prior lows in the $67 area. More damaging losses would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals.
Earnings rose +126% on +29% sales revenues for the Sep '20 quarter versus the year ago period, its 5th consecutive quarterly earnings increase above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its limited annual earnings (A criteria) history was previously noted as a concern.
It hails from the Leisure-Products group which currently has a B- (57) Group Relative Strength rating (L criteria). There is a small supply of only 87.1 million shares outstanding (S criteria). The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 310 in Dec '19 to 542 in Dec '20, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Completed Secondary Offerings on 5/12/20, 2/20/20, 11/08/19 and 5/08/19 after its $18 IPO on 10/25/18.
