Healthy Leadership Underpins Major Indices' Weekly Gains

For the week, the Dow was up 0.1%, the S&P 500 added 0.2%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.7%. Stocks finished slightly lower on Friday. The Dow was off 19 points to 20914. The S&P 500 fell 3 points to 2378 and the Nasdaq Composite was essentially unchanged at 5901. The volume totals reported were reported much higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, inflated by options expirations. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership remained healthy as there were 62 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 70 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted but still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating near a multi-month upward trendline defining near-term support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Leadership remains healthy with many high-ranked stocks hitting new highs and the major averages' (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend.  New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated as investors digested updates on the economy. U.S. factory production rose 0.5% in February, the sixth straight monthly increase in manufacturing output. Separately, a University of Michigan report showed consumer sentiment ticked up in March while current conditions climbed to the highest level in ten years. Overseas, finance leaders from the G-20 industrial and emerging economies met on Friday in Germany to discuss concerns on protectionism and currencies.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In earnings, Adobe Systems (ADBE +3.81%) gapped up  amid increasing demand for its Creative Cloud software suite. Tiffany & Co (TIF +2.71%) rose as the luxury goods retailer reported better-than-expected quarterly profit. Financials underperformed with T. Rowe Price (TROW -3.59%) falling after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. In Health Care, Amgen (AMGN -6.50%) gapped down amid disappointing results from its latest cholesterol-lowering drug.

Treasuries finished higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 11/32 to yield 2.50%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude ticked up 0.1% to $48.78/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.2% to $1229.00/ounce.

Bullish Action Led to +54% Rally Since First Featured

China Lodging Group Ads (HTHT -$2.24 or -3.60% to $59.98) pulled back today after powering to new all-time highs with 2 consecutive volume-driven gains, getting more extended from any sound base.  A "positive reversal" was noted on 3/15/17 after early lows near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($54.93) defining important near-term support.

HTHT reported earnings +0% on +4% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter versus the year ago period, marking a 2nd comparison below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), and its waning sales revenues growth rate has also been noted as a concern. It reported earnings +10% on +6% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter..

HTHT is up +54.3% since first featured in yellow in the 7/13/16 mid-day report (read here).  Disciplined followers of the fact-based investment system know that buying efforts should only be made in fundamentally superior stocks and only after after a technical buy signal has been triggered. Selling should not be based upon a change fundamentals, but should strictly be based upon the technical action in a stock or market. Therefore, those investors with solid profits in HTHT may still be electing to give it the benefit of the doubt until any worrisome technical sell signals raise concerns.

The number of top-rated funds owing its shares rose from 87 in Sep '15 to 164 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Currently the high-ranked Leisure- Lodging firm has a C Timeliness rating and a D Sponsorship rating. Its small supply of 27 million shares (S criteria) in the public float may contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
