Leadership Expanded as Indices Spiked to New Record Highs

Stocks finished firmly higher on Wednesday. The Dow jumped 303 points to 21115. The S&P 500 added 32 points to 2395 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 78 points to 5904. However, volume totals were reported below the prior session totals but still above average on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and more than 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 113 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, up more than four-fold from the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

PICTURED: The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is perched at a record high, up +9.6% year-to-date.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics.  ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages resumed their post-election ascent following President Trump’s speech to Congress Tuesday evening. Bonds moved the other way with the benchmark 10-year note losing 17/32 to yield 2.45% in sympathy with growing expectation for a Fed rate hike in March. After this afternoon’s Beige Book release indicated continued economic growth in most regions, traders are pricing in an 80% probability the Fed increases rates at the next FOMC meeting, according to Bloomberg data. On the data front, the PCE deflator increased by 0.4% sequentially in January, while the Fed’s preferred proxy for inflation climbed 1.9% year-over-year. ISM’s gauge of U.S. manufacturing came in at 57.7 in February, the best level in two years and well above analyst expectations of 56.2.

Nine out of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in the green with Financials and Energy shares pacing the gains. In earnings, Lowe’s Companies (LOW +9.52%) gapped up to challenge its all-time high as the home improvement retailer beat estimates on the top and bottom line. Palo Alto Networks (PANW -24.15%) gapped down testing last year's lows after providing weaker-than-expected current-quarter revenue guidance.

In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude slipped 0.2% to $53.77/barrel while gold lost 0.3% to $1249.90 ounce on the COMEX.

Stubbornly Holding Ground After Breakaway Gap

Arista Networks Inc (ANET +$1.65 or +1.39% to $120.64) has been holding its ground stubbornly, extended from prior highs in the $103 area following a big "breakaway gap" on 2/17/17. It reported earnings +30% on +34% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter and it was noted - "Recovered impressively and faces no resistance due to overhead supply, but it has not formed a sound base after its gap down on 1/17/17."

ANET is up +28.6% since first highlighted at $93.80 in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2015 high plus 10 cents in the 11/21/16 mid-day report (read here). It was last shown in this FSU section on 1/18/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Technical Damages Raised Concern and Triggered Technical Sell Signal", after violating its 50-day moving average (DMA) line also undercutting prior lows in the $91 area. The damaging loss on heavy volume raised concerns and triggered a technical sell signal. It halted its slide near prior highs in the $87 area and eventually rebounded above its 50 DMA line helping its outlook to improve.

Disciplined investors know that risk increases when chasing a stock more than +5% above its prior highs or it pivot point. In all cases, stocks that fall more than 8% from your purchase price should be sold to prevent a small loss from potentially becoming a more devastating loss.

ANET has shown strong and steady increases in quarterly sales revenues while earnings have routinely been well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong, however, its history is limited since its $43 IPO in June of 2014.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 360 in Dec '15 to 439 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The high-ranked Computer - Networking firm has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. Its small supply of 34.8 million shares (S criteria) in the public float may contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Gapped up and hit new all-time highs today after reporting earnings +32% on +26% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above the pivot point. INGN was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high in the 2 prior mid-day reports (read here) and noted -"Perched near all-time highs after a saucer-with-handle base. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs coupled with strong earnings may clinch a technical buy signal. Reported earnings +23% on +33% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter, slightly below the +25% minimum guideline. Due to report Dec '16 earnings news on 2/28/17, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Rebounded and made gradual progress since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 10/27/16." See the latest FSU analysis for more details and an annotated graph.

G - Slumped below its 50 DMA line ($110) and closed near the session low. Further deterioration below recent low ($104.10 on 2/14/17) may trigger a more worrisome technical sell signal. Fundamentals through Dec '16 remain strong.
