Record High Dow Industrial Average Posts 9th Consecutive Gain
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mostly lower on Wednesday. The Dow was up 32 points to 20775. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2362 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 5 points to 5860. Volume totals were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 63 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 91 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is perched at a record high after posting 9 consecutive gains.
Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained an upward trend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The S&P 500 pulled back from record highs on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve released the minutes from its February FOMC meeting. The release showed Fed officials hinted that a rake hike may be coming “fairly soon,” especially if the economy remains strong. According to Bloomberg data, futures are currently pricing a 34% probability of a rate hike by March. On the data front, existing home sales rose 3.3% in January, the fastest pace since 2007.
Five of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Energy shares declined on the session with First Solar (FSLR -8.33%) ending solidly lower. Industrials underperformed with united Parcel Service (UPS -1.95) down after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. In earnings, Toll Brothers (TOL +6.06%) rose after the luxury home builder reported better-than-expected quarterly profit. Garmin (GRMN +7.33%) rose as the company’s full-year revenue guidance came in ahead of Wall Street forecasts. On the M&A front, DuPont (DD +3.39%) rose amid reports that EU antitrust regulators are poised to clear its merger with Dow Chemical (DOW +4.00%).
Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 5/32 to yield 2.41%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude fell 1.4% to $53.57/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.4% to $1232.00/ounce.

Commodity-Linked Groups Were Laggards
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.23%), Bank Index ($BKX -0.09%) and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.08%) had a slightly negative bias. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.04%) and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.08%) both were little changed, but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.26%) ended more than -1% lower. Commodity-linked groups were weak as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.88%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.46%) and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.99%) ended unanimously lower. Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Networking Index ($NWX +0.08%) is perched at record high. During the prior consolidation it found support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Perched Near All-Time High After Concerns Raised by Latest Earnings
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
ServisFirst Bancshares Inc (SFBS +$0.14 or +0.33% to $42.09) has been holding its ground stubbornly and perched at all-time highs. Recently it reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($38.57) defines important near-term support above recent lows in the $36 area. Subsequent violations would trigger technical sell signals.
SFBS was last shown in this FSU section on 1/12/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Stubbornly Holding Ground Near Highs". Do not be confused by 2-1 stock split effective 12/21/16 so the Featured Price, Pivot Point and Max Buy levels were adjusted accordingly. It got a burst of momentum along with many other Financial stocks following the election.
The 4 prior quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), helping it match the fact-based investment system's guidelines. Earnings rose +28%, +34%, and +31% in the Dec '15, Mar and Jun '16 quarters, respectively, and underlying sales revenues growth has been in the +17-26% range. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 159 in Sep '15 to 245 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.2 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 46.3 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. |

G - Holding its ground stubbornly and perched at all-time highs. Recently reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50 DMA line ($38.57) defines important near-term support where a subsequent violation would trigger a technical sell signal. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.

G - Consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($109.94). Further deterioration below recent low ($104.10 on 2/14/17) may trigger a more worrisome technical sell signal. Fundamentals through Dec '16 remain strong.
