Major Indices Edged Higher With Less Leadership

Stocks edged higher Wednesday. The Dow was up 39 points to 22158. The S&P 500 rose 2 points to 2498 and the Nasdaq Composite increased 6 points to 6460. Volume totals reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was slightly positive as advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 45 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 65 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index posted a third consecutive gain, rallying for a new record high.

The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend endured recent pressure however leadership has remained healthy.  Investors should buy stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system on a case-by-case basis as they trigger technical buy signals.

The major averages finished at all-time record levels as investors weighed updates on tax reform and inflation. President Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan both said they anticipate unveiling a new tax plan as soon as the week of September 25th. A report by the Labor Department showed producer prices rose 0.2% in August, below the 0.3% consensus estimate.

Energy was the best performing S&P 500 sector with Chevron rising 1.5% to $114.18 amid higher oil prices. Retailers including Target (TGT +2.80%) rose were notable gainers on the session. Nordstrom (JWN +5.97%) rose on news the department store was close to a deal to go private. On the M&A front, Centene (CNC +8.01%) rose after announcing it would acquire assets of Fideilis Care for approximately $3.8 billion. Technology was weak, led lower by Apple (AAPL -0.75%) following Tuesday’s introduction of its newest iPhone. Equifax (EFX -14.63%) was the biggest loser, as the scope of its data breach widened.

Treasuries were lower with the 10-year note down 7/32 to yield 2.19%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 2.4% to $49.39/barrel as an improved global demand outlook countered an increase in U.S. stockpiles. COMEX gold fell 0.5% to $1321.60/ounce amid a stronger dollar.

Found Prompt Support Near Prior Highs and 50 Day Average

Installed Building Products' (IBP $58.20) remains perched near its "max buy" level and within close striking distance of its all-time high. During its recent consolidation it found support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($55) and prior highs. More damaging losses would raise greater concerns. IBP was last shown in this FSU section on 8/18/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Consolidating Near Prior High Following Breakout". It was highlighted in the 2/27/17 mid-day report in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/08/16 high plus 10 cents (read here).

Fundamentals remain strong after reporting earnings +48% on +33% sales revenues for the Jun '17 quarter. The 3 latest quarterly comparisons had earnings increases well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong since its $11 IPO on 2/13/14.

The high-ranked Building - Maintenance & Service firm has seen the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 226 in Mar '16 to 289 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 31.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. It currently has a Timeliness Rating of B and a Sponsorship Rating of B.
