Breadth Negative as Indices Show Indecisiveness
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished little changed on Tuesday. The Dow was up 5 points to 21998. The S&P 500 slipped a point to 2464 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 7 points to 6333. Volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 9-5 margin on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 31 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, matching the total on the prior session. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs totals on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index has found prompt support and rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line several times in recent months.
The major averages' (M criteria) prior uptrend came under pressure while leadership thinned. Any sustainable rally requires hearty market leadership (a large number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). In weak markets investors should raise cash and reduce exposure to stocks by selling individual issues on a case-by-case basis as they trigger technical sell signals.
The major averages fluctuated as retail stocks declined on Tuesday, paring gains in the broader market. On the data front, retail sales rose 0.6% in July, above expectations of a 0.3% gain. In a separate release, import prices ticked up 0.1% last month, in-line with analyst estimates. Finally, a report showed manufacturing activity in the New York region increased to 25.2 in August from 9.8 the previous month. Amid the strong economic data, the Dollar Index climbed 0.4% with particular strength against the British pound and Japanese yen.
Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Retail shares underperformed with Advance Auto Parts (AAP -20.34%) plunging. Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS -23.03%) cratered after posting weaker-than-expected quarterly results. Elsewhere in earnings, Home Depot (HD -2.65%) fell despite beating estimates on the top and bottom lines. Coach (COH -15.19%) lost ground as the handbag maker’s full-year revenue guidance came in below Street forecasts. In the consumer space, Wynn Resorts (WYNN +6.41%) was a notable winner after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.
Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 12/32 to yield 2.26%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.1% to $47.55/barrel.

Fundamental and Technical Flaws Recently Hurt Outlook
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Netease Inc (NTES -$2.55 or -0.92% to $276.07 has been slumping since last noted when it gapped down and violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line on 8/10/17 with a damaging loss triggering a technical sell signal. Weak action came after it reported Jun '17 earnings +5% on +46% sales revenues, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. It may find likely support near its 200 DMA line, but due to the technical and fundamental deterioration it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.
Disciplined investors limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. Recent gains lacked great volume conviction. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/01/17 high plus 10 cents in the 6/08/17 mid-day report (read here). Its volume-driven gain for a new high on 6/07/17 had helped clinch a technical buy signal. However, it encountered distributional pressure and made limited headway.
NTES was last shown in this FSU section on 7/21/17 with an annotated graph under the headline "Found Recent Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line urrently, it has a Timeliness rating of C and a Sponsorship Rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 844 in Jun '16 to 1,251 in Jun '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. |

Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Still faces some resistance due to overhead supply up through the $115 level.

G - Remains below its 50 DMA line ($99.56), and a rebound is needed for its outlook to improve. Encountering distributional pressure since highlighted in yellow in the 7/31/17 mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its high hit on 5/01/17 plus 10 cents. Failed to produce confirming gains since repeatedly noted - "Subsequent gains and a strong finish above its pivot point may clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Small supply of only 6 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling."

G - Found support above its 200 DMA line ($44.42) with a gain today, but remains well below its 50 DMA line ($49.42). A rebound above the 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve. Faces some resistance due to overhead supply up through the $54 level.
