Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained an upward trend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics.  ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its 11th straight record close ahead of President Trump’s speech to Congress next week. On Thursday, the Dow and S&P 500 closed at record levels amid investor optimism on corporate tax reform. On the data front, new home sales rose 3.7% in January, below expectations of a 6.4% increase. Separately, a University of Michigan report on consumer sentiment came in at 96.3, slightly above estimates of a 96.0 reading.

Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In the consumer space, Nordstrom (JWN +5.74%) rose after the retailer beat estimates on the bottom line by a wide margin. Shares of Foot Locker (FL +9.38%) as same-store sales were up 5% in the fourth-quarter. Financials lagged on the session with Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS -5.59%) after the bank posted its ninth straight annual loss. Technology stocks underperformed with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE -6.89%) down as the corporate software maker cut its full-year profit forecast.

Treasuries finished higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 15/32 to yield 2.32%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.8% to $54.03/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.5% to $1256.90/ounce.

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.15%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.968%) both fell while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.48%) rose on Friday. The tech sector was quiet as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.04%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.09%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.18%) each was little changed. Commodity-linked groups pulled back as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.75%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.09%) fell along with the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.10%).

Fundamental and Technical Deterioration Raised Concerns

Lemaitre Vascular Inc (LMAT +$0.27 or +1.23% to $22.17) held its ground on Friday. Technical and fundamental deterioration have been noted, however, and it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. It gapped down on 2/22/17 for a damaging loss after reporting earnings +0% on +14% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns.

LMAT was last shown in this FSU section on 1/27/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Concerns Increase While Lingering Below 50-Day Moving Average". It stalled soon after a gain for new highs on 1/10/17 was backed by +46% above average volume, just above the minimum of +40% above average volume needed to trigger a proper technical buy signal. Although no resistance remained due to overhead supply, the stock immediately encountered some distributional pressure and slumped back into its prior base, raising concerns.

The high-ranked Medical - Products firm was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 9/20/16 high plus 10 cents in the 10/27/16 mid-day report (read here). Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 0.7 is an unbiased indication that its shares were under distributional pressure over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 184 in Dec '15 to 201 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of 13.2 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
