Major Indices Edged Lower as Economic Data Failed to Inspire Bulls

The Dow lost 81 points, ending a three-session winning streak, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite was down less than 0.1%.  The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 5-3 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 48 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 43 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are still in an uptrend, but that trend has come under pressure in recent weeks. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average recently found prompt support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and remains perched near its record high.

U.S. stocks finished lower on Tuesday, erasing earlier gains as investors digested disappointing economic releases. The yield on the 10-year note declined for a fourth consecutive session, down four basis points to 1.56%, its lowest level in nearly three weeks.

On the data front, the Conference Board's gauge of consumer confidence eased slightly in May to 117.2 from a downwardly revised 117.5 reading in April. Another release revealed new home sales fell 5.9% in April following a big downward revision the prior month. An increase in property values has limited demand, with S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller's measure of national home prices jumping 13.2% year-over-year in March, the largest increase since December 2005. Meanwhile, a number of Federal Reserve officials continued to reassure market participants that any spike in inflation should be short-lived. In commodities, WTI crude edged lower on the heels of its largest two-day advance since March.

Six of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory, with Energy shares leading the decline. Bucking the downtrend were beneficiaries of economic reopenings, with airline and cruise line operators among the standouts. Amazon (AMZN +0.43%) edged higher despite being the subject of an antitrust lawsuit. Meanwhile, Moderna (MRNA +3.10%) rose on news its COVID-19 vaccine demonstrated 100% efficacy in adolescents. Elsewhere, Shake Shack (SHAK 4.48%) rose following a Wall Street analyst upgrade. In earnings, AutoZone (AZO +1.92%) fell as a decline in gross margins overshadowed a 28.9% jump in comparable-store sales.

Retail and Semiconductors Rose as Financials and Energy Fell

The Retail Index ($RLX +0.43%) edged higher while financials had a negative bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.27%) and Bank Index ($BKX -1.33%) both lost ground. The tech sector was mixed and mostly indecisive as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.37%) edged higher while the Networking Index ($NWX -0.51%) and Biotech Index ($BTK -0.78%) both edged lower. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.33%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.98%) were standout decliners as energy-linked groups slumped.  The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.38%) edged lower.

Car Dealership Firm Challenging All-Time High

Americas Car-Mart Inc (CRMT +$9.87 or +6.60% to $159.50) finished strong after highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) while challenging its all-time high with above average volume behind today's gap up and 4th consecutive gain. It formed an orderly 10-week base and a new pivot point was cited based on its 3/15/21 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains for new highs (N criteria) and a strong close above its pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume is needed to trigger a proper technical buy signal.

It has a 97 Earnings Per Share Rating. Bullish action came after it reported earnings +359% on +43% sales revenues for the Apr '21 quarter versus the year-ago period, its 4th consecutive quarterly earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) with accelerating sales revenues growth rate. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.

The high-ranked SPECIALTY RETAIL - Auto Dealerships saw the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 307 on Dec '20 to 323 in Mar '21, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It has an Accumulation/Distribution rating of B- and a Timeliness rating of B. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 6.6 million shares can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
