Indices Overcame Early Weakness and Ended Mixed

Stocks finished mixed on Wednesday. The Dow was down 6 points to 20661. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2348 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 27 points to 5821. The volume totals reported were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE but decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were only 11 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted abruptly and they were outnumbered by new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index undercut its January low then found support and finished near the session high.

Leadership contracted as fewer high-ranked stocks hit new highs while the major averages' (M criteria) uptrend came under pressure.  New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages fluctuated on the session as investors await tomorrow’s Congressional vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). On Tuesday, stocks experienced their worst day of 2017 amid uncertainty around President Trump’s ability to implement economic policy. On the data front, existing home sales fell 3.7% in February, below analyst expectations. In London, a suspected terrorist plowed a car into pedestrians, leaving four people dead near the British Parliament complex.

Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In earnings, FedEx (FDX +2.13%) rose amid renewed optimism for the company’s fourth-quarter profit margins. Shares of Nike (NKE -7.05%) gapped down and sank below its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines after quarterly revenue came in below Street forecasts. In Materials, Silver Wheaton (SLW +7.43%) rallied above its 50 DMA line as the precious metal firm increased its dividend by 16.7%. Industrials shares fluctuated with American Airlines (AAL -0.17%) edging lower after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. In the consumer space, Sears Holding (SHLD -12.42%) tumbled as the company issued a warning regarding its ability to exist going forward.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 5/32 to yield 2.39%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.2% to $48.15/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.1% to $1247.50/ounce.

Semiconductor, Retail, and Gold & Silver Indexes Rose

The Bank Index ($BKX -0.05%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.19%) both were down slightly on Wednesday's session while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.46%) underpinned the major averages with a modest gain. The tech sector was led by the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.10%), followed by the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.69%) and a smaller gain for the Networking Index ($NWX +0.19%) The Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.75%) edged lower and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.00%) finished flat, meanwhile the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.44%) posted another small gain.

Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com

PICTURED: The 1-year chart of the Retail Index ($RLX +0.46%) shows how the index held its ground above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and above prior highs. The strong start for the Retail.Index in 2017 has been a reassuring sign, since nearly 2/3 of the US economy is based on consumer spending. Subsequent technical deterioration would be considered a warning sign that the broader market's rally is faltering.

Ordinary Pullback From Highs With Lighter Volume

Insperity Inc (NSP -$0.90 or -1.03% to $86.25) quietly pulled back below its "max buy" level with lighter than average volume behind today's 5th consecutive loss. Its color code was changed to yellow. Prior highs in the $86 area and old highs the $82 area define initial support levels to watch above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($79.28).

Its Timeliness Rating improved from C to A and its Sponsorship Rating improved from C to B since the high-ranked Commercial Services - Outsourcing firm was last shown in this FSU section on 2/14/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Big Volume-Driven Gains Indicative of Institutional Demand". It was highlighted in the earlier mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point cited based on its 7/26/16 high plus 10 cents. A considerable volume-driven gain on 2/13/17 had triggered a technical buy signal.

It has tallied 4 consecutive strong earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). It reported earnings +76% on +12% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has improved after a downturn in FY '13.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 319 in Mar '16 to 399 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 15.1 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
